Mike Skinner, relieved Dale at approx 30 laps into the race. He had to be helped from his car, still suffering from a broken sternum and clavicle from the week before at Talladega.
He had to be cut from the car after rolling over and hitting the wall when hit from behind by Ernie Irvan.
The next week, after Indy, He set a track record and sat on the Pole at Watkins Glen. He completed the whole race, led the most laps and finished in top 5. Turning left and right.
Nobody could accuse him of not being tough after that performance.

Funny you should ask this question. You have obviously found out your answer, but they actually talked about this in the Dale movie that aired on CMT this past Tuesday. If you missed try to find when it will be reairred. Very good behind the scenes look at parts of his life.

I believe that it was Mike Skinner. Which is ironic since he was fired as his team mate earlier.
