I just bought one off e-bay and was really excited, but I'm finding it takes FOREVER to cook anything. Can anyone tell me if this is normal for all electric steamers of if I got a dodgy one? Personal experience would be good please. I tried to cook some pieces of apple and pear for my baby today (very small pieces and they weren't cooked after being in for an hour.

I think maybe I got a dodgy one... It did come with that manual, I followed the instructions. It tells me that the time is WAY faster to cook things than it is. Contacted person I bought it from, she said it was always like that... I got an electric one coz I kept getting distracted and burning the one on the stove, thank you for the suggestion though!

You got a lousy one. I can steam carrots in about 10-15 minutes or so in my Oster.

I wish I could answer you about electric steamers, but I really don't know.

What I DO know is that you can buy a steamer basket nearly anywhere (I got mine at a Giant grocery store) for about $10. I steam all of my veggies in there for my baby. I put about an inch of water in the bottom of a pot, insert the basket and add a handful of one-inch pieces of squash or I put in fresh whole green beans, etc. I set the stove on high and in about 20-25 minutes, everything is steamed and ready!

For apples and pears, I peel and core them...I use an apple slicer to core and slice them. Then I add a splash of water and cook them down into apple/pear sauce. It takes about 45 minutes. You cook on LOW and it just turns to mush. I add a drop of cinnamon (no sugar needed if you use a mix of sweet apples & pears. Try to use a variety of apples).

Yummy & easy.

I hope this helps....

Hum, our steamer works in about 15 minutes for broccoli or rice. I always did my pears in a pan with a bit of water and then used the food processor. For apples, I just used Motts all natural no sugar added. Works out cheaper than buying the apples.

It's a nice appliance to own, but I have always steamed food either in the microwave, or on top of the stove. You can use your steamer every time for cooking vegetables.
