My son (lives in Oz) and his girlfriend (who is Aussie) are spending Christmas with me in England. I'll cook traditional turkey and pud but can you suggest a starter that's australian?

She will love having a traditional feast no matter what you serve - but it's lovely that you plan to include something Australian in there :=)

A seafood cocktail or some prawns would be good as a starter, alternatively, something made with Aussie cheeses - How about cheese & sage damper?

Traditional Australian Christmas Dinners are about the same as an English one. As people have said, seafood is very high on the list - and many people like tohave a bbq (though this may be a bit cold for your guys. I've had some years where we haven't had any hot food except potatoes and some other vegies, it was all cold meats, fresh sea food and LOTS of tropical fruit.
Starters in our family we'll that's lollies or dried fruit and nuts so I reckon a plate of fruit would be good. Why not do a pavlova to go with the pudding. I always do the alternative dessert in my family whether it be a fruit platter or an icecream pudding or something.

Christmas in Australia is in the middle of summer and very hot. A lot people do have a traditional Chrismas similar to what you're having, but a very Aussie tradition is to have prawns and seafood, but I think that's mainly because it's so hot! I think your sons girlfriend will enjoy a winter Christmas and all the traditions that go with it. Your son may have already told her all about it so she might be looking forward to a traditional English Christmas!

most aussies come form an british background so christmas dinner is pretty much the same, it's just the meat is sometimes cooked on the BBQ and there is a lot more beer drinking and sitting in the sun. I've always had the same food as i did in england. A lot of Aussies like their seafood though.

Seafood at Christmas is very Australian. I like to toss some green prawns in a wok with chopped garlic, ginger and chilli and then serve with a pesto mayonnaise (make an aioli, add a couple of handfulls of basil and blend til smooth and deliciosly green). If you want less mess, peel the prawns before cooking them.

A prawn coctail always goes down well on Xmas. It's basically just individual servings of prawns and seafood sauce on a bed of lettuce. Not surprisingly (given that it's summer), Aussies have salads with their meal as well as a traditional roast or BBQ.

LOL, purely examine Elizabeth's answer... i think of maximum persons had that precise formative years!!

we always start with prawns mid morning. we unwrap the paper and sit there and shell them and dip them in cocktail sauce and eat, no dishes to clean up and its yummy. for Xmas dinner we have roast pork with crackling and apple sauce, roast chicken, leg ham, roast potato's, roast pumpkin and all the vegie's and finally steamed pudding with brandy sauce.
