In the US of A, you are allowed to own sniper rifles, Semi-Automatic assault rifles, shotguns etc. This is allowed by the Federal Gov. However, several states have limited these down, Washington DC (not a state), New York, California, Massachussets all have very strict gun laws.

Now beyond that, for the fully automatic weapons, and grenades, cannons, and other super high calibre stuff (like anti-tank guns. You need a permit from the ATF ( Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) to own.. It is expensive, and there are several ways to do it, from an owner to a dealer with items on permenant loan...

Difference between an owner and a dealer.
there are about 20 GAU12 Mini-guns by general electric in private hands.. these are the rotating barrel 7.62 mini guns that are in the side doors of assault helicopters / transport helicopters. they fire over 3,000 rounds a min.
Cost to owner $250,000 (last I heard)
Cost to Dealer $49,500 (last I heard)

Now when you have a FFL CLass 3 License (or a Class II (I think is a dealer license)) then you basicly sign some of your rights away, they can come into you business or home (if home based) and inspect all weapons on premises even if they are privatly owned by someone else. The fee owning the guns is paid each year, and the transfer fees are pretty bad. If you lose your license or drop the dealer, you have to get the guns to a properly licensed person within a certian amount of time, usually selling for a loss if not just destroying the weapon.

Now the DD (Destructive Devices) usually require a little bit more, but are allowed.. the Storage of such items is a ***** to keep within the rules. that is why binary explosives like Tannerite is fun, you mix it, you use it, you dont store any explosive at all.

If you want some fun stuff check out Knobb Creek machine Gun shoot. one of the best in private owned shoots out there.

Not in the US military. If you are a police officer or federal agent then some types you can keep. In the US though most states let you have any type of weapon you want as long as it is not full automatic.

Since you will be living in England, your government will not even allow you to own a rifle let alone cool weapons like in the movies. God Bless the USA.

Im many states (not the Liberal ones, California, Mass, NY, NJ, Maine, Maryland, etc) you can own anything as long as it is not fully automatic. In order to own a weapon capable of full auto you have to have a permit for each one. A couple of years ago the fee was $200.00 per permit and it was required to be renewed each year. Don't know what it is now.

Semi-auto only: AK-47s, M-16 style, Thompson .45 machine guns, .50cal rifles, all fair game. Just have to have a place to shoot them.

No... I was USN from 1985-1999, we turned in the weapons we were issued (they took your name and SSN when they issued them, so SURE they expect them back).

AND we collected some interesting firearms in Kuwait... and the US Customs made CLEAR that any foreign weapons would be confiscated. The searched our luggage.

So seriously... I DOUBT that today even you have ANY chance of bringing back a captured weapon... and NO doubt that the BRITS take back the ISSUED weapons.

And respectfully... if your IQ is related to your spelling... you have NO right to hold a firearm

In the states, it does not matter who you are. Automatic weapons are not allowed unless you have a class III federal firearms license.
