you can get arthritis at any age. What's happened is you have over used your muscles in the knee. You need to rest for at least three days and stay off of your feet as much as possible. Place an ice pack over the knee for fifteen minutes, several times a day. Advil liquid capsules work very quickly for pain relief and can be taken four times a day.
If you don't feel better in a few days see your medical doctor for a complete examination and diagnosis.

Age has nothing to do with arthritis. You can get it at any age. If you change your diet to include more fresh fruits and vegetables and less red meats, pork or junk foods, you body responds better. If you have knee pain now, have some one in your family go to a good herb store, not GNC. Get some of the hottest cayenne(chili) powder they sell, usually around 100,000 heat units. When you are home and just before bed, wash the knee and pat it dry. Then in a small bowl or edged dish mix the cayenne with some extra virgin olive oil. Make a mash, not quite a paste, just a little looser. Spread it over the knee and leave on overnight. Do this until the pain disappears. What the cayenne does is brings the blood to the surface to break up any calcium deposits. What the diet does is strengthen the blood so that it can do it's job better. Also, anyone in your family, if they have arthritis and they do this for about six to eight months, the arthritis disappears. It is cheap, economical and unlike doctors' bogus drugs, it works.(in my opinion, doctors are not to be trusted)

How long have you had the pain? If you have just only recently had it, after doing the hike, then I'm assuming it's temporary (torn or stretched ligament or something to that effect). People your age CAN get arthritis, but unless you're having it elsewhere, I just doubt it. If you're still having problems after like two weeks, I'd say go in and get it checked out. Good luck.

Probably is the hike. I would wear very supportive shoes for the next few days. Good sneakers. Unfortunately there is a lot to the song of the ankle bone is connected to the knee bone.

I was diagnosed with degenerative arthritis at eighteen and docs told me to avoid exercise. that was dumb.
physical therapy works if you work it
riding a bike strengthens muscles and helps keep tendons and ligaments flexible without putting too much pressure on it
obesity will cause knee pain
playing soccer and tennis without lifting weights or riding a bike can cause injuries that are very common.
dont' settle for a diagnosis, get strong, get physical therapy and get moving.

Anything is possible. But it may be ligaments that were stressed, esp. if you twisted your knee or have been overcompensating when you walk or run for an ankle or foot problem.
