this week I lost my beautiful 18 year old Poodle and am devastated I cared for him as I care for myself. He was given Frontline and collapsed frothing from the mouth and with black poo everywhere The Vet said it wasn't from Frontline and foolishly I gave it to him again.Since then I have taken control and go to www.Shirleys wellness cafe for all my advice. As for flea/tick collars would you put one on yourself Dogs can live for a long long time if you keep as much in tune with nature as possible.Raw meat and bones lots of exercise and fresh water have kept my dogs healthy and Vet free

I am so sorry that you lost your friend like that. It must have been a hard experience. Please don't let that sway you all the way in the other direction, however. There are many benefits to having your dog vet checked yearly, and there are also benefits to some of the medications given to dogs. Heartworm is a very real threat, and there is no natural way to protect your dog from that. It only takes ONE mosquito to infect your dog. Also, certain areas of the country have had a resurgence of rabies in the wildlife, and if your dog gets that, it is over.
I had a wonderful Katrina victim I adopted last year. She had tested heartworm negative at the shelter, so we didn't bring her back to the vet until the following year. As it turned out, she had been positive the whole time, and was already late stage two by the time we got her treatment. She died of a massive stroke three days later, from the stress. All of my other babies have been on heartworm preventative and flea and tick preventative their whole lives, and this is the first dog I have lost to heartworm. I will NOT lose another dog that way.
Please reconsider what you are thinking about preventatives. The alternative is possible death. My dog was only 2 1/2 and only had a good life for 10 months. No dog deserves that.

Yeah, sometimes even proffesional advice might not be enough to keep your pets safe. You think you are doing something good for your pet, and then to your surprise, your dog becomes ill! Well, I usually use revolution on my dog. I work for an animal hospital and have never seen a dog collapse or react to the meds in that product. But yeah, if there way a sure way to prevent ticks, fleas, and heartworm, I'd try it without question. Sorry to hear what happened to your dog. And no, I would never use a flea collar on my pets. It is even worse than Frontline. Frontline isn't even carried up here in Canada.

I am deeply sorry about your dog, but I suspect there were other forces of nature at work here. I have a 19 year-old Doxie and he does fine on Frontline. I know I will come home one day soon and he will be gone but I will not blame the vet or the medicine. The alternative problems from failure to treat the fleas is far worse than the treatment itself. I would personally consider it as irresponsible to keep my dog from his regular vet checkups as I would to keep myself from having a yearly mammogram. I know people who have their dogs on a B.A.R.F. diet and they do well. I personally can't afford it and don't have the time to prepare it, so I research pet foods and buy them the very best.

Anyone who knows me knows that I love my dogs as some do their children and no one would ever accuse me of poisoning my dogs with flea and tick preventative or heartworm preventative. To take such preventative measures is what I would term "responsible pet ownership". I respect your opinion and I would at least hope that you would not judge me for making what I feel are the best decisions for my kids.

people arent tryin to poison there dogs with these thing they are tryin to help them, my dogs get flea tick and heart worm meds once a month and they are posioned raw diet is good but the are some very good dogs food out there as well. i think you are devastated bye the loss of your dog and want something to blame it on, you need to face the truth your dog was old, hell he was really old but that just show you gave him the best life you could dont think about his death think about his life and the good times you shared. i am truely sorry for your lose and hope you feel better soon!

I have never found ANY natural remedy to keep fleas and ticks from my dog. EVER. And I have tries a LOT. I use Advantage and have never had a problem. Fleas can lead to tapeworms and anemia and then you have more problems.
For me it is not worth the risk.
I have also had a couple of dogs that have had bad reactions to herbal and natural remedies.
Nothing is going to work for every dog.

I'm sorry that you lost your dog. I agree with you that looking into feeding raw is beneficial, but it is misleading to say that your dog will be vet-free if you feed him the right food - that's not very honest, is it?
