If I said there was no God, the religious will be onto me. And If I said Atheism is rubbish, the atheists will be onto me. There appears to be the same group mentality operating in both groups. And as part of a group you must have a guru?

meeh is right in his answer to the question and its components. But to use the therm intellectuals for people who go by a definition without question brings the term "intellectual " into disrepute.
One cannot call such closed shops intellectuals. They are what I call Pseudo-intellectuals. An intellectual would see the scope of my atheists questions on here tonight and realise that there is more to life than just saying I'm such and such because it says so that siuch are such kind of thing without going any further. In fact a belief in nothing is a belief in something. The something here being nothing.
So you worship nothing and If I present the God of nothing what are you going to say?
There is more to everything than most people realise. In fact I have gathered along the way the Atheists.

In short: yes.
People use the term religion for more terms than just the dictionary definition that holds Christianity and Judaism and Islam in one big bag. "Losing my religion" by REM isn't about losing one's Christianity, is it? If you listen to people talk, you'll hear people say things like "Music is my religion" or "That guy's a God" - they don't pray at the altar of music, nor do they think that "that guy" is their personal savior.
Seriously - you intellectual snobs that hide behind the dictionary are, really, less intelligent than a person who deviates from the big book and uses their brain to create as original thought as they possibly can.
That being said: yes. Atheism is the religion of the unbeliever. Atheists often are as fervent about their atheistic faith as theists are about their own. Atheists often use their own blend of logic and popular atheist book-writers to dictate their beliefs, much like the Bible or Qu'ran dictates to Christians and Muslims.
Again, yes, you could say that atheism is the religion of the unbeliever.

Shawn B - my belief system doesn't come from narrow-mindedness but from open-mindedness. I don't worship the dictionary - if anything, I worship thought. Words evolve to become many-faceted beyond what the conservative river of educated thought deems correct or proper. That doesn't make it wrong.
All those people who write things like "Look up what religion means" miss the point, and clearly don't get what abstract thought is.

Atheism is not a religion, for the same reason that "theism", "polytheism", and "deism" are not religions. These words ONLY describe where one stands on the question of deity. You need much more than that to define an actual religion. Atheism = "a" + "theism" = "no belief in deity". That's ALL the word means.
And no, the word does not mean "the absence of religion", so you can't even call it the "religion of no religion". If there's no ceremony or dogma, then it's not a religion.
For that matter, what is an "unbeliever"? Everybody is an non-believer in some religion or another, since not everybody can follow every religion.
EDIT: Your example is fallacious. People who have certain political opinions too will be "onto" those who oppose it. That doesn't make something like "gun control" a religion. And no, being part of a group does not mean you have a "guru". We have a definition for "atheism", we have people who, for their different reasons, fit that definition and take it up for themselves. This isn't rocket science.

Atheism, as a philosophical view, is the position that either affirms the nonexistence of gods or rejects theism. When defined more broadly, atheism is the absence of belief in deities, alternatively called nontheism. Although atheists are commonly assumed to be irreligious, some religions, such as Buddhism, have been characterized as atheistic because of their lack of belief in a personal god.

When we think of religion, we generally think of something organized. Atheism is certainly not an organization with rules, meetings, leaders, etc.
If by "religion" you mean any system of belief or opinion, you could call a political idea a religion. Soviet communism actually did take the form of a religion because it was exclusive of others, had not only a strict system of belief, but also of behaviour, and eventually had its shrines, and worshipped its leaders and founders. It was more of a religion than many forms of evangelical Christianity would be. However, I really don't see how we can consider atheism to be a religion in any serious sense of the word.

I believe so. If it is not a religion it is at least a religious stance.
Most of the Atheists insist that it cannot be a religion if it is about not believing in having a religion. It would also be "defining the person by something they do not have".
Atheists are not one homogeneous group; it is just a general term for people that for many different reasons do not believe in a higher power. Some are spiritual; some are not. Some are tolerant of religion; some actively dislike religion.
The only thing that Atheists sometimes agree on (along with many religions, including many progressive Christians) is the importance of keeping church and state separate.
We do not want religion to interfere in the governing of the country any more than we want governments to interfere in how we practice our religion.
The so-called Athenda (Atheist Agenda) is about protecting us all.

I see it as neither non secular or non violent. It relies upon completely upon the guy for a manner he or she perspectives it. One atheist could be a raving technology-orientated lunatic, yet another can in basic terms not care approximately distinctive perspectives and prepare tolerance. however the comparable is going for another guy or woman in all walks of existence, no count what the non secular determination is. i'm going to place it this type: atheism and peace are 2 countless issues. yet whilst somebody could have the two jointly, then kudos to them.

Athiesm is the absence or disbelief in a religion or religions or the belief in a higher power. please not to be offensive but lookup the feinition before asking these questions. It just looks bad on you when you ask an unintelligent question, although we get a kick out of it, but it's more of an annoyance and a waste of points.

Atheism is not a religion it is simply the lack of belief in god(s). How that can be construed as rubbish is beyond me I am afraid.

A better way to look at theists and atheists is as a philosophy. In that way we can see the comparison that some hold athiestic philosophy as stringently as any thiest holds thier belief.
