I forgot to mail in my credit card payment this week. I didn't want it to be late so I thought I would just do a western union quick collect and get it over with. When I called my credit card company to get the codes I needed, I got a man with a very bad Indian accent, he could not help me so he transferred me to another Indian man who also had no idea what I was talking about. After the third, I gave up and mailed it. Why are so many American companies sending their customer service centers to India where nobody here can understand them?

India and the Philippines are the 2 main places for call centers. I believe American Express uses the Philippines (much better english) than India. It's super cheap there. There are no benefits to pay, and those countries have big unemployment. The credit card companies save money and in turn when they run into delinquent payers and are not collecting money, they don't sweat because there overhead is low.

I know your frustration......
Dealt with many reps who can't speak the language (they're polite but it doesn't deny the language barrier).
It all comes down to the $$ for companies.

Last minute to avoid finance fees/late charge and a lower credit score - over the phone payment should be your choice.

Solution - does your bank offer a bill pay service?
Definitely paying bills online thru your bank is by far a better option. Most banks guarantee receipt, you can set up a minimum payment monthly or pay additional payments at any time.

Protecting your credit from late payments is essential.
I absolutely love my bill pay service from my local bank - most credit card payments are electronic and gtd. receipt 2 business days.

You think make a payment over the phone is hard - you should try trying to resolve a computer issue.........
if the person hadn't been so polite I would have lost it.
America is outsourcing everything !

Because with minimum wage and labor unions, it cost a lot of money to run a call center in the US. However, India does not have those things and therefore you can pay them a fraction of what you'd pay an employee in the US.

Because the pay rate is about 1/3 of what it takes to maintain a U.S. call center .
For a 66% savings , they go to the far east .

They've been doing this for years; people in India work for nothing, and big companies don't care about anything or anybody except maximizing their bottom line.
