Or is the need to be right as a culture stronger than the desire to get along with other cultures? You can't all be TOTALLY right, you know.

Whoa..27 answers so far. I think its kind of interesting to see that there is a negative idea attached to world peace?
I would like to elaborate, or clarify...When I said "world religion", I should have said.."a common ground or merger between the beliefs".

One of the end times prophecies in Revelations is the "one world religion" that everybody will be forced to follow. (Revelation 13:8)
So, yes, as a Christian, I believe there will be a world unifying religion. However, this will not be a good thing.

Well, ALL religions can't be right can they?
What if one was? What if there is one that's holy and the truth? What if there is no other way to God but through this one religion? There is no "The truth for you."
2+2=4 is a truth. This is not subject to interpretation.
One can say I don't believe you have the truth but truth is just what it is, truth.
What if?
We have non christian evidence of Jesus from Tacitus and Josephus both historians. And a Governor named Pliny the Younger who all wrote about "Christos" and his followers the Christan's.
Archaeologists have found the tomb of Caiaphas who was the Pharisee that brought Jesus to trial.
Jesus WAS a real person who was an historical figure. Even well read Atheists KNOW this.
We have over 5000 documented ancient findings of scripture, many in different languages, all the same. WE have the dead sea scrolls to prove this also. The Vatican just bought 2 gospels dating 90 ad, the same as we have today. There is prophesies that has come to pass from the bible that proves it's reliability. Over 300 just for the man Jesus.
Since the bible is reliable, and Jesus WAS here you must decide.
Was he a nut? A liar, Or who he claimed to be.

The Bible predicts there will be a single world religion and a One World Government with a World President.
Unfortunately the world religion will be Satanic (although on the surface it will look good) and the World President will be the Anti-christ who pretends to bring peace and harmony but brings war and persecution.
If any of us live long enough to see it within our lifetimes, and we remind people about the Bible prophecy coming true before our own eyes, we will be told we are just imagining it and it's just a co-incidence that a similar story was told in Bible because as everyone knows the Bible was is just a collection of myths and fairy tales!
How do I know this?
Because it's what they say about the many Bible prophecies about the rise and fall of cities, nations and leaders which have already happened. They just don't want to know about it because if they accept it then their false reality will just crumble - so they are in a constant state of denial.
PS
In reply to melgonz:
Christianity never told anyone to kill people in crusades and inquisitions, they were told those things by a State Established and run Church which made it illegal to read the Bible and there was a death penalty for even having a Bible in your house, because if the people were to read the scriptures they would have discovered that Jesus and the Apostles never taught or practiced such atrocities.
In fact it would have put the Church out of business because they would have also discovered that just about everything else their religious leaders were telling them wasn't in the Bible either.
The inquisition was one of their brutal methods of silencing anyone who dared to question what the so called "official church of God" was teaching and doing. Torture and execution was also inflicted on Christians who wanted nothing to do with that church - they were branded hererics and hunted down and eliminated.
Your beef is valid but should not be directed at Christianity but at those who misused it for their own political and commercial purposes.

A unified world religion is like putting all of your favorite foods into one pot and mixing them together.
I love barbecued chicken, frosted mini wheats, Dr. Pepper, Strawberry Ice Cream, Watermelon, chocolate covered cherries, and peanut butter. But I sure would not want to have a cook mix those ingredients into one casserole.
That's the same thing with a unified world religion. We would take the things that make each religion distinctive and blur them together for the sake of not offending someone else.
Isn't that what they did in the Roman Empire? The Christians refused to worship all other Gods and as a result were fed to the lions. Seems to me, a unified world religion would punish anyone who felt deeply about their own God. It would lack any sort of respect for people who have a strong belief in their religion.

Mankind will do the Tower of Babel thing once more and create a world religion. But this will be in direct opposition to God's purposes as He detests humanistic religions. However the rightful King, Jesus, will return to earth and establish world peace with justice, but it will not be easily accepted by the majority. For a glimpse of these events read Psalm 2. In the psalm Jesus and His Father are having a staff meeting regarding this topic.

Good question! Does seem hopeless at this point, doesn't it? I doubt it really will ever happen. Too much discord between some of them. Was thinking, our basic religions here in the U.S., maybe, but am rethinking that, too. Catholicism is too strong to ever give in to accept like Lutherans, Methodists, Baptists, etc. into their church group unless all took on their doctrines. Same with any I suppose. Even if we go into the battle of Armageddon they will still be split. Too bad, huh?

Humans are clan animals. We can reach a degree of compatibility with a certain number of our fellows, but once we exceed that number, we begin to divide into rival groups, competing with each other. Remember high school? We don't move much beyond that, really
You will have noticed that even within the major monotheistic religions, there are sects and sub-sects and the like.

There is and can only be One Truth, One G-d, and One way to eternal salvation.
We already have a glimpse of the outcome of - not "if" - but "when" that happens.
May I suggest you read the book of Revelation - in the Bible.
I will never be for a 'unified world religion or government'!

After the rapture, the antichrist, beast & false prophet will try to have a unifying world religion. They will cut off the heads of everyone who doesn't take the mark of the beast (666) or bow to the beast. So? Comform & bow to the beast or get your head cut off.
But then when Jesus comes back with his Saints, He is throwing the beast & false prophet into the lake of fire & throwing satan & his in the abyss for the Millinnium Reign of Christ. Then Christ Reigns the Millinnium. Then that will be a unifying world religion where no one dies & everyone is happy.

There will be a false one world religion under the reign of the Anti-Christ, but it is a false religion that will be run by the principles of the flesh and not the principles of God, then the real One World religion will arise under the real Lord Jesus Christ which will stand for righteousness.
