Dear Mark, -- It was not a false claim. Chagrin. I really did fail to report my "Saturday Night" poker winning. And, I was audited by IRS, and I had to pay the taxes plus a fine. -- And, yes, I know it was a family member. (I am a retired federal investigator, and I had a friend in IRS who made me a copy of the original complaint.)

Dear "utalk" - I won only a few hundred dollars, the agent and I had to guestimate it . (dollar limit, 3 raises,) But the fine was $500. -

I would have to question their mental stability(seriously). Some folks just snap and never come back. In that case I would forgive.
No other reason would be acceptable for such a betrayal.
edit: Thrice! I knew I liked you!

I would feel betrayed. I would think long and hard about what to say. A warning to other family members would definitely be in order. I live in an area where bartering is still very common. When I bought one of my horses, there was a automobile in the deal. How do you even report such trades? It is not uncommon for doctors and dentists to trade their services in exchange for legal council. Just how much did my Sweet Uncle win, anyway?

I think I would let the real 'family' take care of it.
You just say the word, Uncle P.
I am so sorry this has happened to you. It is a truly sick thing to do. I would stay as far from this family member as is humanly possible. If this should not be possible, I have a cannoli in New Jersey waiting for this particular relative.
EDIT: Hi, Mama! *Winks* Er, is Pops around? Where are the Tortellis tonight? We got some, eh, business that needs takin' care of.

Offer them another Saturday night,to get some of their money back!! We have enough problems with the Yahoo Watchdogs,I wouldn't want the IRS after me,as well
Seriously,I don't gamble, but If I did and this was the scenario,I would hope, that they would come to me first, rather than reporting me. I would be very hurt, obviously,if they did not. Of course no one in my family would ever consider such a thing. Which reminds me,my one son does very well in that Texas Hold-Em poker and has won even a state championship...hhmmmm...I think he needs to hook ole Dad up..or else!!!!

Wow. Just...Wow. That is so unimaginable! I think Mama hit the nail on the head - and cracked me up while saying it..some people just snap and never come back. Hysterical and true.
I'm so sorry this happened to you! It's just bizzare that a family member would report you to the IRS. I wouldn't report my worst enemy to the IRS. The IRS is EVIL!!!!

I would go to their house, break in the door, and throw that person halfway across the room (that was a needless, petty thing to do, snitching on something of so little consequence that, when the government realizes it, could result in your possible arrest!)

That is nuts!
1. Betrayed
2. Nothing. In a few months, an inexplicable run of "bad luck" would suddenly start affecting them.
Never do things overtly when covertly is an option.
