I'm a huge proponent of going where your heart says you should go. If there's something that you really, really want to do, you'll find a way to do it. Architecture might be a more stable position, simply because anything that's built requires an architect at some point. It might be harder to find work as an art director, but only you can answer the question of whether or not you have the talent to do this.

Good luck!

Certain jobs favour certain personality types. One of the problems is that you are 17. The human brain doesn't mature until you are 21. Work that I do now, is different from the work I was interested in when I started studying.

Architecture sounds like a creative career. But for every great building, their are people designing run of the mill houses. Most customers don't want innovation. But there are many opportunities for creativity in that area.

Art director? I am not 100% sure what that is. Careers in studying art are fairly limited. There is starving artist or working in art galleries. Though there is also teaching.

It is up to you to define your own future in a career. One way I help students make a choice, is to describe what it is that people do the most in a job.

Architects spend a lot of time sitting at a computer, implementing a design (maybe 1% of their time is spent on the creative part of the design)

Art director, would spend a lot time organising, managing, promoting.

One of the very best books you can get which will help you focus on where you need to go is something called "What Color Is Your Parachute?" They've updated the book a few times, it's also online.

Be 100% truthful when you answer the questions, don't answer them the way you think others want you to answer. If I'd done it the right way I'd have eliminated 8 years of dickering around and would have gotten into my chosen field a LOT earlier! It's a darn good book to help you get things throught through and see which way you really DO lean towards. Even the library should have a copy.

I went to school for architecture. I decided to go another route two years into my masters degree.

The problem is Architects design buildings then the plans are used over in over again. eventually there will not be much of a need for architects.

Go to eplans.com or houseplans.com, they're selling plan for $1000 to $2000 a pop.
