We adopted an abused toy poodle a few weeks ago and I can't figure our how to get rid of his terrible odor. One day after a bath his hair is oily and dirty and he smells like he's been rolling in trash.
We think he is 3 or 4 years old but I can't be sure. I use special prescription sulfur shampoo and I bathe him every 2 to 3 days. I had him groomed and shaved very short and he eats a premium dry vegetarian food specially formulated for healthy skin and hair. He is a indoor dog and spends very little time outside. I guess his teeth need to be cleaned but they don't seem bad enough to be the cause.

You would be suprised how bad a dog can smell from the teeth!!!! Take the dog to the vet to rule out any other problems. Sometimes they can have something stuck between the teeth or on the rof of the mouth. As it rots, it stinks. It can also be an anal gland problem.

See a vet.

Some times poor quality food can cause body odor. Also if the dog was in a shelter, it can pick up smells. These smells can stay in the pores for a while. I would keep washing the dog. Since it is prescription, I am sure it says how often to use it. It could be anals, or teeth, but if you have a prescription you must have seen a vet.

Have you changed the diet yet. Make your own put boiled chicken, cooked rice and a few carrots in a blender. Is he allergic to the antibiotics. Do you bath the poor thing too much. Maybe if you used a water vinegar rinse after the bath to make sure you get all the soap off and hopefully make the skin feel better. Ask the Vet if you can give him Claritin the Cost co brand is much less costly. Maybe if you rub him down with tea tree oil after a bath. Tea tree oil kind of smells strong at first but the smell goes away awhile. Tea tree oil helped my itchy skin. I don't know but just thought I would throw out a few suggestions.

Bathing him so often can be a major problem. DOnt bath him so often. You are washing away his nautral oils. Which causes skin and coat problems which means stink.

take him to the vet and have his ears checked and his anal glands these both can cause a real bad odor if they are not clean or are infected
