Your kitty probably picked up a cold or other viral infection from where she was. It is very common.
A good alternative is a pet sitter; a person who will come in once or more per day to look after your cat, play with it, make sure the litter box is clean and there is food and water. Most are bonded for both their protection and yours. Asking your vet is the first step. Sometimes they use their own technicians in that service, as it is extra money for the technician. Other times they can recommend a pet sitter. I have posted a link to one such service, and it will probably give you ideas as to what services can be performed.
For myself, I am able to impose on a neighbor but I consider myself very lucky.

It depends how long you go on vacation. I leave my kitties alone over the weekends and just make sure they have enough food or water. Check with your vet to see if they do boarding. My vet checks on the animals to make sure they are feeling okay and they keep records on whether they peed, had a fecal, or are eating. This way they have record that something is wrong. If you have neighbors or friends you can trust you can also give them the keys to your place and have them check on your pet every other day and be sure to give them some kind of monetary present or gift for their work.

Cats are happiest in their own environment, so I suggest leaving her at home. (I always leave mine home, and I trade cat-care with a couple of friends—we cover each other's houses and cats anytime one of us goes on vacation). If you don't have a friend who can come in to feed her every day, then ask your vet to recommend a professional pet-sitter.
If your cat has health issues (requires medication, etc. but is not so sick as to require a "medical board" at the vet), then see if a vet tech in your vet's office might be willing to cat-sit for you to give the cat her medication.

Hire a professional pet sitter..your cat cat stay home in it's own environment and not be exposed to other animals and diseases..the sitter will come daily to check on her, feed her, play with her, clean the litter box etc. Do an internet search for a sitter in your area or get a reference from your vet.

Check with your local vet, a lot of the technicians board pets or do in home pet sitting. We did that when we were gone for 2 weeks.

You can always call around to vet hospitals or talk to your vet.
Lots of vet hospitals board. There are trained personnel to check for any signs of sickness.
And the boarding areas are separate from the other hospital areas to keep and sickness from spreading.
