You shouldn't bath them.. Take a warm damp cloth and wipe them clean.. They should not get cold and damp yet at all.. Damp and drafty will kill them quickly.

Just leave them alone for now. You can safely bathe the mother dog after two weeks from birth, but the puppies can't be bathed until they are at least 8 weeks old. Yes, they seem 'nasty' and 'slimey' right now, but as the mother recovers she'll clean both herself and the puppies, and that is the way it should be, for now, for both the mother's health and her puppies health. Put mom and puppies into a small room or closet you don't use much to confine the 'odor' you find offensive, but be sure to let the mom out to do her 'duties' (outdoors) and eat and drink. If the odor continues after three days, take both mom and pups to the vet for a 'check-up' to be sure there is nothing wrong with any of them, and ask him to give you something to cut the odor and clean the animals without the use of soap and water ... he may have something, he may not, but go with what he says, okay?

Clean them up right away but gently, NO SOAP, water only, with body temperature water and place them in a heated crate or wrapped in heated towels to dry.

Get at least one other person to help you do this so that one can be washing while the other dries. You don't want to leave those babies wet any longer than you have to.

By the way, momma might be suffering too much to go outside or she may have lost, temporarily, any control she has over that area of her body so don't scold her, just make an area large enough to place a wee wee pad for her to use close to her pups and change it as soon as she soils it.

If she is doing this in a couple days she needs to see a vet cause something might have gone wrong inside of her.

make the dog go outside to potty.. you may have to do it forcefully if she is that stubborn. once she goes out, then comes back, sees the pups are just fine. she should not have the problem again.. maybe she is a first time mom??

as for cleaning... remove all bedding... and have clean damp towels to wipe them with. no soap needed.. just wipe. but since body temp can drop quickly. make it fast work. get it done. and then let the mother back in.....

congratulations on your new pups. My dog just delivered last nite until this am. I cant take off work as well because my work is in danger if i take off. I left my dog and the pups at home in my room door closed with a clean bedding on the floor. I left my dog some food and water as well. I mouth fed her this am before going to work. COngratulations again on your new pups. Enjoy them! And to the ones who left you some negative answers... just dont mind them. Good luck!

Use a warm wash cloth and plain water. That is all you need. They are too young for shampoo or anything of the sort. Usually the mother will wash them with her tounge but if not just plain water.

You have newborn puppies and went to WORK!!!!

YOU LOCKED THE MOTHER IN A CRATE WITH THEM!!!

So.. essentially you are training these pups from birth to be nasty dirty dogs who will sh*t all over someone's house because they weren't raised any better.

WHY do you not have a whelping pen???? I feel so sorry for your mother dog.

Lord, I hope you're ashamed of yourself... but I'm sure you're not. What gives me hope is that there is KARMA... so when you're laying in your diaper in a nursing home... just remember this!!!

It makes me sad to hear that the new mom and puppies were locked in a crate while you were at work. Really sad. Can't even take some time off work to get them off to a good start???
