I am selling a car registered in FL in IL to a private party. What steps do I need to take to protect myself? Is the process any different because the car is out of state?

Bill of Sale

Look on your Department of Transportations site and search for a form that you will need to send in to notify them of change in ownership. (Cant remember the exact name of the form, sorry)

The answer is i little more involved than some earlier answers suggest but it is in fact a simple process. What you want more than ANYTHING is to get the vehicle...legally...out of your name. Each state has different rules, regs and forms to transfer ownership into someones name, AND...until its in the buyers name...its in yours.
To find the answer call your local florida dmv. Tell them not only the state but the county your buyer lives in.
Good Luck.

Your chum is a fool for giving those human beings a dime. They bought the motor vehicle "as is" and he owes them no longer something. inner maximum occasion used vehicle sales are consistently "as is" transactions except the supplier grants a written guarantee. enable them to get a legal expert, it is going to fee them a large style of money and that they does not win in courtroom. Thermostats placed on out, that's the way it is going. Are those jerks going to hang-out your chum for the the remainder of his existence every time the motor vehicle desires new brakes or tires? tell them to circulate pound sand and don't pay them yet another penny.

No. Get the cash, remove the FL tag, sign over the title. You're done.

First get the CASH in your hand, then sign the title. It's that simple, if done in that order.
