I know that wine needs to be covered and refrigerated once its been opened, but how long does it last after opening.

How long does heavier liquors (spirits) last. Such as, rum, scotch, bourbon, gin, tequila, whisky, brandy - liqueurs like Grand Marnier, amaretto, Chambord, Godiva Chocolate liqueur, etc… How long do these items last once they have been opened and do any of them need to refrigerated.

There are two types of alcohol. "live agent" alcohols like beer or wine, and "distilled' alcohols commonly called spirits.

Live agent alcohols still have the yeast in them. The yeast will continue to age as it sits. These alcohols will need to be refrigerated once they've been open.

Spirits however are distilled then bottled. Because of this, the yeasts are now dead, and they won't age anymore. You can also safely leave them out of the refridgerator and not kill yourself. The only time you do need to keep them cold is if they have milk/creme in them.

Both types need to be stored in cool dark place, as heat and/or sunshine will alter the taste even if they are unopened. Live agent alcohols will change in taste over time, but distilleds will last longer then you do. 100+ years, as long as they are kept in a cool dark place. If exposed to either one, you can still drink it without harming you, but it will taste very different.

Alcohol Shelf Life

Liquor has a pretty long shelf life and does not refrigeration, unless you like it cold. For example, storing vodka in the freezer for a late night shot.

Wine on the other hand is supposed to lose some of it's flavor and crispness after a week or two, even with the bottle corked and refrigerated. It will still be edible older, but the "experts" say it will taste dull.

Actually liquor has a long shelf life after opened. I have had bottles that were still good several years later. They do not need to be refrigerated. The exception would be any type of cream liqueur....like Irish Creme would be better preserved in the fridge.

Wines stay good in the bottle in the fridge for about a week. The boxed wines stay longer if refridgerated(A month). I have had vodka and whiskey stay perfect for over 3 months withour refrigerating BUT the top has to be on tight!!

I didn't think wine needed to be refrigerated... people just keep them in their wine cellar or something... but yeah heavier liquors and liquers can last outside of the fridge... I would keep the godiva liquer in the fridge tho cuz it just seems like it should be refrigerated... I always keep liquor in the fridge anyway though cuz the shots go down easier when they're cold...
