well if you can see a winglet and 4 engines then, a little hump or bulge in the upper fusealage area, its a B747-400 or Boeing 747 400 series you can find the aircraft registration on their wings and the tail section of the aircraft. and if you are riding on a 4 engine, lenghty aircraft with winglet, your on an Airbus side the model is A340 and by the way check our\t their sites
aside from airbus and boeings we also have Aerospatiele international, the Bombardier , maker of Learjets etc...

P.S. i agree with the onme with a source in airliners.net there are milluons of pictures where you can identify to the letter with pictures of the aircraft. and a complete specifiocations but for the availability you can check the aircraft's manufacturers' web address.

Im not sure you can really go by winglets. The company i work for has been doing winglet mods on 757's. When i started working around a/c i couldnt tell a 737 from an MD-11. If you spend time around them you will start to pick up on the looks of the differents a/c makes and models. Then you have those unique a/c such as the Osprey. You will notice that when it goes by.

You can learn to tell the make of a plane by its shape, but if one is flying by, you cannot determine the model because there are more similarities than differences.

I would suggest getting an Aircraft Identification Handbook, like the Jane's. Once you get a general picture, you can try searching the www.airliners.net for confirmation

Sadly, a little familiarity is required. Just like learning to recognize cars or ships.

I dont know if there is a site, but when you hang around an airport long enough you just learn them, just like you learn to tell what cars are driving by you on the freeway.

familiarity. the MD-11 is identical to the l-1011. McDonnell Douglas and Lockheed combined "talents" into creating this aircraft. it's difficult to distinguish the two from afar.
