As a kid when we had to learn the ten, it was kill.
We rhymed it with steal to help us remember.

The Greek word is the word for homicide, murder and so is the Hebrew translation. With that in mind I'd say the sixth commandment reads thou shalt not murder since Hebrew and Greek were the original languages of the Bible (and Jesus was Jewish).

The King James translation says "Thou shalt not kill" but in the original Hebrew, in which it was written, it means "Thou shalt not murder."
In Jewish law, there is a difference between "murder" and "kill."
An example of murder is -- Walking up to someone and taking their life.
An example of kill is -- Someone holds a knife to your parents, and so you suddenly grabe a knife, too, and stab the bad guy.
So, the lesson is... With all of its merits, the King James version of the Bible has some mis-translations like the one you pointed-out.

Murder, we are allowed to kill under certain circumstances, like in a war, murder is just killing someone to kill someone really, with no true meaning

I tis translated as kill. However the word it comes from actually means to murder. So it would more appropriately be translated thou shalt not murder.

Murder. It is addressing the taking of another's life due to one's underlying hatred.
If one killed accidentally, they could flee to a city of refuge.
They also killed when God commanded them to do so.

Matthew 19:18 Â He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,
