The 45 LC, with light cowboy loads, is very easy to shoot, because it has low recoil, it would be great for a beginner.
With hot loads, it is easily capable of taking mountain lion and black bear.

If you are a beginner, you really need to start with a .22 to learn the basics. But I can understand the allure of that Schofield, they call me too.
As good as they look, they are not strong enough for heavy hunting loads, and the sights are probably not up to hunting accuracy. And fer God's sake don't stuff any Buffalo Bore .45 LC Magnum loads in that pistol! You will risk ruining the gun! That load is meant for use in Rugers and Freedom Arms revolvers.
You can probably kill a mountain lion or black bear with standard .45 LC loads, but I would not want to go hunting a bear with them on purpose.
For practice, get some of the Cowboy loads, which are light target loads. You will have less recoil.
If you want to handgun hunt, you need to get a Ruger Blackhawk or Super Blackhawk in .44 RemMag or .45 LC. They will handle any reasonable load you can stuff into the chambers.

The .45 Long Colt is a bit big for a beginner but it will kill a mountain lion or a Black bear. There are documented cases of even Grizzly bears being killed with a .45 LC as a weapon of opportunity.
A beginner should begin with a .22 LR then work up to a .38 Special then the Long Colt.
Good luck.

Would it be easy for a beginner, you have to get professional knowledge and train
Would it kill a mountain lion or black bear, look into the Ruger single actions, they can be hand loaded up to around 44 Magnum performance.
In this situation you go with a 44 MAG. or a hot loaded 45 LC in a Ruger Blackhawk.

.45 Colt is a great round, especially in a modern revolver with heavy loads. Just make sure you don't get the heavy loads in a frame that isn't rated for the heavy loads. And the original Colt Single Action Army revolvers are not strong enough to take the heavy loads. Ruger single and double action revolvers are super strong frames and my buddy swears by his Colt Anaconda. There are others around your biggest decision is probably going to be between single and double action. About black bears and mountain lions--the .45 with heavy loads is as good as the .44 magnum.

the uberti will not handle the hot loads
ruger and Thompson center are the only ones that have been deemed safe for hot loads according to the speer #13 reloading Manuel
maybe depends on the shooter i would go with a 22Lr to learn with because it is cheaper and doesn't kick like a 45LC
i am sure they have killed several mountain lions and black bears

The .45 Long Colt round have been around sin the 1870's in the blackpower configeration. Now its is loaded with smokeless propellant. It is a weak cartridge to be using on bear, and med. size game. Recoil is moderate, and can be handled by most people. For serious handgun hunting I would not consider using anthing less tah .41 magnum. My choice would be a .44 magnum. To answr your questio, yes,the .45 Colt round can kill thse animals you're talking about, but it has to be a well placed shot, ortherwise, you are in some serious trouble of getting mauled to death, especially if you just nick them.

I've been shooting a .45 LC in my Ruger Blackhawk for over 20 years, it's a great cartridge and yes it is powerful enough for Cougar or Black bear.
