- 2002 Dodge Ram 1500, 2 wheel drive.

- Makes a whurring/hollowing noise. The sound occurs when accelerating from a dead stop. I would describe it as a muffled seal bark.

- I presume its the rear differential. Would changing the fluid fix this? Any suggestions?

if it makes the noise going around corners, its the trac-lok clutches for the limited slip in the rear diff. the friction modifier breaks down and must be changed every 15000 miles. if this is it, have it changed or do it yourself using 75w90 or 75w140 synthetic, and use 2 bottles of mopar friction modifier from a dealer. i've used aftermarket stuff and it doesn't work. if it makes the noise going in a straight line, its not the clutches but could still be a bearing problem. does it make noise at highway speeds? it could also be a u joint thats dry.

Suppose to have it changed out after 35k miles or so.. at least thats what the dodge dealer told me. But after the price they gave me for the 35k mile maintenance, I said screw it.. i think it woulda costed me 3500.00 to do everything that it needs at 35k
