I highly reccommend you should try karate. It really helps you strengthen your body. You also learn valuable moves when comfronted by attackers. Karate is also important to strengthen your mind.
You work out before classes, and then learn all the different combos of kicks and punches you learn for your belt rank. You can even practice katas.
For higher belts, you got to practice with weapons. I even still have my bo staff and kai sticks! :)
You also learn how to grapple and practice with partners.
I started out like at a young age; at 10 years old. I finally got my reccommended black belt at age 15; and from there I stopped.
But I remember classes were so fun! I had like the best 2 sensei's in my old school in Colorado! I remember going from a white belt to a recommended red belt in that school.
The tests weren't all that difficult; but definately a work out. The best part I liked about the test were afterward when you got your belt. The sensei would slightly punch you in your gut, to see how tough you toughened up your stomach muscles after doing crunches.
I even had this habit of doing a move, and afterward I'd brush my hair back. I had thick long short hair then! :D

Try it. If you like it, you can continue, if you don't, you can try something else... So, the only thing to be careful of is a contract. Don't join a school that requires you to sign a contract for more than 6 months. If possible, avoid contracts completely, but sometimes a school program (etc) requires you to pay for 3-6 months with no refunds. That is usually because of the board of education, etc. (not the teacher).
Only you can really decide if "karate" will suit you. A big factor will be the class and teacher, so don't judge any one art or style based on one visit or one person. Check out a bunch of places and pick the one that suits you the best. Most teachers will understand and encourage you to do this.

Karate is or can be hard work and sweating so if you don't like working out you may not like it. On the other hand some people with an interest in martial arts will still do it because that interest outweighs their dislikes. It can also be fun to some extent but should not be overly fun if it is a good school. As for embarrassing once you realize that everyone else has a gi on just like you and started out just like you and they survived any feelings of embarrassment you can also.

I did Karate classes as a teenager and they were pretty fun not to mention they instilled discipline. Important for you, you will learn techniques to fend off would be rapists/muggers.
Hopefully, your class will not have a window open to the public, so dumb dumbs can gawk while you are doing your kicks.

DO IT and enjoy it as an art and as a form of self defense. It is good discipline too. There is money in it too as an actress or choreographer consultant. You can even teach after you earn a black belt.

embarrasing? i wouldn't say that. it was fun. i have to admit that it was hard, kinda like school, but it was worth it. you learn patience and discipline and you meet a lot of cool people that want to better themselves just like you do. i say go for it. your feet get a little dirty though. that was the only thing.

It's better to actually see it with your own eyes than have it explained by somebody.
