I live in Florida and am more funky/free-spirited than my fiance. Im going to Iowa to meet his family who all live on farms and don't agree with spending money on appearances. What should i wear to my future brother in laws BBQ/rehearsal dinner to make a good impression?
Thanks!

Sorry, I meant that his family happens to be more conservative style wise not the state as a whole, I used to live in the mid-west and have noticed that styles are much more revealing in Florida than up north.

Maybe a pair of jeans with a nice top. Not one that's daring, or has a deep neckline.

You can be yourself by being a little more conservative but adding a little of your fun side with accessories, just don't overdo. This is your big first impression. Iowa isn't used to seeing the wilder side. They are going to get an insight into you by talking with you so don't let revealing clothes be their only first look. Wear something that would be appropriate for the location, the weather, and find out from your fiance what others will be wearing. If it's a jeans kind of thing, go for it, but not low cut showing lots of skin. If it's a little more dress up, a cute sundress but not too sexy. He can help you with this and should.

I moved from KC to Iowa and it is definitely more conservative, well maybe conservative isn't the correct term. It is more "Plain". Khakis and polo/button downs reign supreme. For the most part people don't get dolled up very often either. I would do a plain print shirt and khaki/jean skirt if it is a outdoor event, or if you are as free spirited-dress how you want. If still in doubt ask your fiance how dressed up people will be or what he plans on wearing and compliment his style so if you are dressed out of place so is he which will make you more comfortable :)

If you have multiple piercings you might consider removing (or covering up with clothing) some of the most noticeable jewelry. If you have green hair you'll probably get some attention but that part's up to you.
Otherwise Iowa is pretty casual but people may dress up a bit for a wedding-related event. If the BBQ is outside it may be more practical not to wear shoes with high heels.
Basically just be yourself and since it's wedding-related dresses or skirts would be appropriate but nice slacks could be fine too. Don't try too hard. Iowans are pretty laid back and they're not as naive as you may think.

I live in Iowa and grew up on a farm. I am far from conservative. Don't stereotype people just because they are farmers from Iowa.
That being said, don't go out and buy new clothing. Find something that you are comfortable wearing and something that isn't too revealing or slutty. Also dress weather appropriate...because in the summer, it's really hot in Iowa and in the winter it's really cold. A nice sun dress would be appropriate for a summer rehearsal.

I would wear a simple blouse or top, nothing tight or expensive looking, and a below-the-knee skirt with sensible shoes, and nylons if the weather allows.
It is not a completely casual occasion, so jeans are out.
A print dress that length would be good too, but no plunging neckline.
Being your self is fine, but when it comes to something as unimportant as clothes, there's no point in picking fights.
I don't think of clothes as important usually, because I am a home nudist. It's just fabric - don't let it come between you and your fiance's family.

dress 'smart casual'...hopefully you know what that is in good taste and relatively attractive, but not overly flashy.

Probably some nice slacks with decent shirt. Remember, that dressing for the occasion shows that you respect yourself and also the other people. You don't want to just show up to a BBQ, dressed to kill with a cocktail dress...but neither do you want to show up like you're going to a rave beach party either. Wear something you feel comfortable in...smart casual is usually the best way to go for family meetings.

Don't change your style, that would be like changing your personality, but go for a little discretion. Since I don't know what exactly your style is I can't point out the more conservative pieces of it, but just tone it down a bit, while still keeping it you. If that makes any sense:P

I'd go with a floral print dress, maybe tea length. Light make-up, little jewelry.

Good luck!
