parents are just giving their kids what they want. Stay strong, she doesn't need a cell phone! she's never by herself! She only wants one b/c all her friends have one....and quite honestly, their parents prolly can't say "no" to anything.
when she's driving, or at least more into after-school activities, etc, then it makes more sense, but for now, if she's never even alone for any reason, seems like a waste.

Lenz is right it is a great idea. My son is 16 and he has a Tracfone pre-paid and so do I. This way we can keep in touch. I always hated cell phones until I almost got hit by a drunk driver. Then I bought me and my son one. The Tracfone has a 60 minute card which costs about $20.00. The phone itself, I got the one that was on sale. It's not fancy and it doesn't have a camera or all the other things teenagers want. It does have text messaging and 911 is free. My son knows the rules and he goes by them because I won't buy minutes if they are wasted on talking to friends. The text messaging we use if we know that one or the other has to have the cell phone off. It will be the best decision you will ever make. There has been so many children missing and alot of perverts out there.

Well, there are some Pros and Cons. I got my first cell phone when I was in 7th grade. I'm in 8th grade now lol.
She doesn't really need a cell phone right now, 'cause she might just talk on the cell phone, and she can do that on the home phone. But sometimes, if there is an emergency, she can call you or contact someone else, buttttttttttt since you are always watching her and keeping a close eye on her, then she shouldn't need one. You can just tell her that she's too young and you're not her friends' mom, so you don't think she should have a cell phone.

I got one when I was 11, I don't have one anymore because I was irresponsible. But I stay after school for soccer and go places with my friends with out parents. Also if she waits for the bus in the morning or walks any where to get home you should think about it. There's always a lot of pedophiles hanging around places like that.

Tell her that just because everyone else has one, it doesn't automatically mean that she's got to have one as well. Need and want are different things. Tell her that she'll get one when the time is right, and when YOU feel that she needs one.
I never asked for a cell, but my parents got me one when I was in 7th grade any way. I still don't know why people are so crazy over it.

That's really to young i think but if they do a Go Phone is the way to go. You can buy so many minutes, that way you can limit the charges by buying a certain amount of minutes a month, when they run out of minutes they have to wait until the time you choose to get more minutes on the phone, also they are only $20.00 if it got lost you wouldn't be out alot of money!

unless your daughter is away from you for any long period of time I don't see the need to give her one.
I bought one for my 10 year old - she was away for most of the summer and I needed a direct line to her. She has cell phone rules, and knows she is not allowed to call friends to chit chat. Only family members and emergency contacts are on her phone.

My son's 11 and we gave him one because he started middle school this year and takes a bus twice a week. The "primary" reason (which he knows and respects) is for him to check in so we know he is safe.
We purposely bought him a pay-as-you-go phone from T-Mobile and he watches his minutes and budgets his time. This has become a great learning tool for budgeting time / money, and we never expected that from it.
If I was to do it again, I may consider Sprint's package - They have one for kids that has the GPS tracking ..

She doesnt need one- I got mine during 10th grade and I'm a senior now (im 16)....it only helps with after school activities like sports or clubs. Otherwise, kids just get cell phones because it is "in" right now.
