Sodas should be given as a treat - it shouldn't become a regular part of one's diet.
Juice & Milk would be better choices - although most juices (especially those from concentrate) have almost as much sugar in them as sodas. And milk (especially whole milk) can be fattening for children in large quantities.
Water is the best choice overall... and drinking water needs to be encouraged in just about everyone.

Coke is really bad for kids ; it's not so great for adults either. Works great to clean the corrosion off of car battery terminals, but kids don't need the caffein and sugar. Juice is not much better.... the sugar doesn't satisfy hunger for long, but just adds a lot of calories: result - fat kids who go from hyper to depressed in about an hour. Milk is good for kids - it's got lots of protein, not too much sugar.... but kids who are even slightly overweight should drink skim or half-skim milk..... ask your pediatrician for details.
Water is always good.

Studies show water juice and milk are healthier, and kids should drink them a lot more. Kids who are raised with a lot of pop tend to drink pop more, kids who are raised on water, juice, and milk often don't like pop as much. Kids who don't drink a lot of pop also tend to be slimmer. The sugar and caffiene in pop (coke.... round here in the midwest, we say pop) also causes them to be more hyper and sometimes hard to get to go to bed at night.
In a nutshell, water juice and milk are better.

Kids should drink water juice and milk rather coke. Coke satisfies your thirst BUT add unwanted calories and no nutritional value. I have a friend who never drank water, finishes one bottle a coke a day and she ended up having her gallbladder stones removed because of Coke.

Coke or any soda isn't good for children. Should only be allowed as an occasional treat.
They are much better off with water, milk and 100percent juice.

I'm a mom and never allowed my son to drink coke or soda when he was young. Fruit juice is fine (not cool aid or sunny delight or other sugar water disguised as juice), skim milk is fine, water is fine and caffein-free tea.
Soda and sugary cereals leave a film on your teeth that doesn't come off by just brushing, so on top of making you fat, they rot your teeth. Pediatric dentist told me that years ago and showed me some pictures of kids who drink a lot of soda. Not pretty!!

While most anything is okay in moderation, I'd focus primarily on water, with milk with meals. Juice is not nutritionally beneficial--it's a concentrated sugar source, and not much better, health-wise, than soda.
Offering whole fruit (which also has fiber) is a better option.
