Generally, naproxen (Aleve) and ibuprofen both help with inflammation, pain relief, and a fever, but should be taken with food since they can cause an upset stomach otherwise. Acetominophen (Tylenol) is useless for inflammation, but is just as good for pain relief and a fever, and does not cause stomach upset, so it is best if there is no swelling involved. Acetominophen is the safest at approved doses, but is much more dangerous when overdosed. Aspirin is very hard on the stomach, and should generally be not used anymore for pain relief, except for migraine relief, where Excedrin Migraine (aspirin + caffeine) is effective.

WARNING!!! All of these over-the-counter drugs mentioned are effective when used according to the directions.

What is overlooked by many is the ability to overdose with many of them when taken in combination with each other and with other prescription drugs.

NEVER!!!! take any drug of any kind without first consulting your physician or at the very least your pharmacist for evaluation of drug interaction.

I personally take Warfrin a blood thinner. When combined with aspirin or other similar drugs the blood becomes even thinner than the doctor prescribing the blood thinner for my condition.

This warning also applies to use of alcohol, which can result in other interaction complications.

Hi Moon!! I sincerely hope all is well. I wanted to send you a message to thank-you for starring my question, but you're email link is no longer activated. So, let me just say "thank-you". I think it's so kind that you star your contacts' questions. You're very sweet. So, thank-you dear :-)

Anyhow....

To answer your question:

Obviously it's ideal to remove the source of the pain. If that cannot be done, for whatever reason, pain medications can usually control the pain. These types of medications include:

<
<
<
In September 2006 the Food and Drug Administration approved a new form of the opioid fentanyl (Fentora) that dissolves in your mouth (so, rapidly absorbed through the lining of your mouth). This medication may be particularly effective for intermittent pain episodes, which are sometimes called "incident pain."

<
Antidepressants: Antidepressants are used to relieve pain regardless of if the person is depressed. Elavil, Pamelor, Norpramine are antidepressants prescribed to treat pain.

Anticonvulsants (anti-seizure medications): Despite the name, anticonvulsants are used not only for seizures, but also to control burning and tingling pain, painful symptoms of nerve damage. Tegretol and Neurontin require prescriptions

Other drugs: Corticosteroids such as Deltasone are used to lessen swelling, which often causes pain

Take care Moon :-)

Sometimes your body can handle pain itself, just try to figure what cost the pane.

Different things work for different ailments, and not all people respond to the same treatments.
More importantly, you failed to mention which type of ailments you were referring to. :O(

Oh well, ((SEEKER HUGS)) anyway. :O)
