Apparently, it is not against the law.

It's not me, but it's happening in my husband's family and they are having a real hard time with it. They are a pretty close family and they feel like this has crossed the line of family boundries.

i think that is so gross, but hey, i had a horrible crush on my first cousin once. i would never ever date him though. i just admire him and moved on. seriously, crushes happen all the time and there's no way i'm going to date my first cousin when there are hundreds of other crushes that i could actually date.

it is such a no no.

Well Miss Lou, I guess I'll go against the tide and say, it might not be so bad.

I don't believe it is a good idea to date a First Cousin, i.e. the child of an aunt or uncle, but Second Cousins and beyond should be fair game. For centuries, ruling classes have not only dated cousins, but generally ended up marrying them. That explains why certain genetic diseases run in most royal families.

I also don't think it is a good idea to marry or have children with a relative as close as a Second Cousin, but there is nothing wrong with dating and having fun together.

I know the Egyptian Pharaohs married their sisters, but that was a long time ago and was to ensure the throne stayed in the family. But this ain't Egypt and you ain't royalty, so don't fool around with near kin.

Speaking strictly as a geneticist..this is not a good idea. Spread out the gene pool! Researchers concluded that children of marriages between cousins inherited recessive genetic disorders, such as cystic fibrosis and Tay-Sachs disease, in 7% to 8% of cases. For the general population, the rate was 5%. That doesn't "seem" like much but when you do the math...a 7 to 8% chance (of genetic disorder) is 50% greater than a 5% chance. That's a big jump!

I used to think that the blood test you had to have before getting married was to insure the parties were not related. Guess that's not so. My old friend married her 1st cousin and there was something wrong with all 3 of her children. 2 of them have since died and 1 is mentally off. Not retarded like the son that died, but slow and really wacky.
There are way too many people out there that do not share the same blood for dating a cousin to even be an option. To me it's unthinkable. It's incest no matter how you look at it.

It's not against the law, but in most states it's against the law to marry.

To me, it's just not right. It's just something you don't do. But obviously it's been done before so I have little effect on it.
