maybe show some effort to learn their language. they'll appreciate your interest and that might help break the ice.

Just continue to speak with them and be their friends. I dont have an issue with people who speak a different language though I think it's common courtesy to speak english when they're with people who don't speak their native language. But if they speak their own language in your company, I'd nicely ask them to speak English--something nice like, "I wish I knew what you were saying.. do you think you can try to speak English when I'm with you cuz I feel kinda left out" If they won't do that for you, then I dont think they are worthy of friendship.
You can also try to learn their language, but mainly, I think if they want to be friends, they should make sure you can communicate well together.

It's rude of them to speak to one another in their own language when you are there and can't understand them. Just try to include yourself, during a natural break on the conversation, but speak the language that you know. If they also know it, they should show some manners. But give them time alone to talk to people in their own language, as well.

I try to learn the basic words to begin a conversation. I don't speak English but now that i'm in college and I have to do new friends I always try to begin a conversation by greeting him/her. If it is cold i would say wow is cold, maybe that person will answer me and then we can start talking about something else.

sounds like my situation. cause i am a saudi arabian, and my native language is arabic. even though i speak english and spanish and i have lived in the USA for 9 years, i am still in that situation because in my country, there are so many indians and pakistanis who speak arabic and urdu or hindi. and since they speak arabic, we can both communicate.

Are you talking about speaking in different dialects [Mandarin vs. Cantonese in Chinese]? or are you trying to speak with those who don't speak the same language as you, like someone's speaking in Chinese and you speak English? or someone's speaking British and you're speaking American English?

just start talking to them. ask them to teach you their language. i have a lot of friends who are native spanish and japanese speakers, and my husband is a native spanish speaker. we communicate fairly well, and laugh about our mistakes.
