It depends on the religion and sect. For most civilized people, photography was no different than painting and the same rules would apply. Some groups forbid images (based on that passage or on other passages in other scriptures) and some do not. In more primitive areas, in a addition to the fact that some societies banned images, there was the fact that photography seemed to do its work by magic.
Still, in the mainstream christian world, photography was not condemned by the majority any more than portrait painting was condemned. As for TV, the devil was due to the programming, not to TV's images.

Some did and some still do. The Amish for instance.
Btw, put yourself in their place and imagine seeing a photo for the very first time. Surely many thought it was black magic or something evil. Today we are programed to know they are just pictures, but imagine growing up and never seeing such a thing. It would be scary at first, no doubt.

Interesting question and I'm going to research it. Photography was invented in the 1830's, so I'll check around that time period. Odds are that preachers DID speak out against it, they tend to speak out against anything that's new and/or different.

a photographic image is produced by hardening part of the emulsion then washing away (aka engraving) the stuff that doesn't form the image; so it's a graven image to be sure.
that and it is steals your soul.

Hey---the Christian Church yelled & screamed when Galileo proposed the earth wasn't fixed & standing on pillars as the Bible states --they tortured him until he withdrew his theory--they just don't like facts proving their Bible completely wrong.

I don't know, they had a problem with movies though. My pastor's joke was: it was okay to look at pictures, but it became a sin if you looked at them at 30 frames per second.

Good question. I'm old, but not old enough to have been around for the first cameras. Sorry I couldn't help you.

I know some Christian denominations are anti-photography... so yes, I would only assume it was once more wide-spread... interesting question...

Probably. It was used for pornography shortly after it was invented. And Christians are usually against anything they don't understand.
