As long as they are currently our ally, we have no problems supporting them. That includes supporting them by selling them weapons. We have done it many times in the past and most of the time it works out just fine. It's only the few times it hasn't worked out that we hear about it.
Selling weapons to our allies brings in a very small percentage of our gross national product. However, I do agree with your statement about incapable of rational thought with money. Just to prove it, look at the way we think we can fight things like poverty and ignorance just by throwing money at it.

US will always sell arms to other countries in order to gain but it will guarantee that it still has the superiority.
