You do not need a passport to travel to Canada by land. If you are under 18, you may be asked for a letter signed byboth parents and notarized, giving you permission to leave the country. Your birth certificate copy needs to be a certified copy, not just a paper copy machine copy. Your school I.D. is ok if it has a photo. A state I D. card is better. See 3rd paragraph under " bringing children to Canada" in the 2nd website.
Just saw answers from 2 people who say you must have a pssport. simpy put, they are wrong. you do not need a passport to travel to Canada by land yet...tho, if you have one, you may use it. !st website documents this.

You must have your original birth certificate or a STATE ISSUED copy and a photo I.D. A copy from a machine is worthless.

You don't say where in NJ you are arriving but why don't you fly straight to Montreal? If you fly into Newark, NJ, it is a good 8 hour drive to Montreal...at least.

Also, if you are not old enough to be considered an adult (18-21), you will not be allowed to cross the border into Canada.

From what I have read you will need your passport to enter Canada. I have also read they are really cracking down on people coming into Canada, like a 20 year old DUI and they wont let you in. Be prepared to be turned away at the border, or worse yet they let you in and the US wont let you back and your stuck in Canada.

I think you should get your passport. Your Dad probably has a good reason for not wanting to give it to you.
