They are being told not to say much of anything because of the mistaken belief that it will lead kids to having sex. No one pays attention to the multiple studies that have shown that teens who go through abstinence ed are more likely to have sex and unsafe sex at that.
What's really sad is that if you look at some of the questions on here, teens are so uneducated about their bodies, they think normal things, like normal vaginal discharge, are abnormal. Teens should at least be given enough information so they know and understand their bodies.

Masturbating is part of childhood, at any age. So is playing "doctor", the time-honored way of learning about sex and sex differences.
But I've noticed from old sociology books that after WWII parents started trying to prolong childhood as long as possible. Part of that has been preserving their "innocence" (or ignorance). So today's parents grew up without the answers themselves (a girl here stated that her mother, a school teacher, told her she couldn't get pregnant before her first period).
Also, we seem to be in the grip of what I call the New Puritanism, where anything to do with sex is taboo, and kids playing "doctor" are now charged with sex crimes and condemned to a lifetime of psychiatric counseling. When we were freer, we were healthier, it seems.

I agree... it is really sad. In fact I don't even remember having a sex ed class in school.
But I think this place is a good way to ask questions you wouldn't be comfortable asking people you know.
Your comment on the towels and 'I'll pull out!' had me rofl-ing... how sad is that?

First off, I'm 15 and I know more than a lot adults, having helped raise my little sister, getting sex education in elementary school, and personal experience. What about the kids that don't have parents to talk to?? Or the ones that are too embarrassed to talk about sex and periods? This is every ones source of information! I would rather come on here and ask, rather than ask someone at home.

STD's, possibly safe sex (depending on the district, but most still teach abstinence), a definition of homosexuality but that's about it.

Most states have stopped teaching it and parents won't talk to their kids, or when they try to kids are too embarassed to listen.
