i have two mixed lab puppies (5 1/1 mos.) they are also inbred which could be a variable in my problem. u see i have an apartment and i keep the dog in the kitchen when we arent home with a baby gate. well they can climb over that thing no problem and when they do they tear up my house to crap! anything adn everything they can get into they do. so yes, i have a crate, but i feel bad bc when i put them in their they start barking and yelpin up a storm and u know i have neightbors on both sides of me and below me and theres NOWAY they CANT hear these dogs. they bark n bark until they bark themselves out i suppose. i want to be able to let them go wherever they want in the house without being so overhyper. they can just walk around and look at stuff and lay down somewhere. they have to run and chase each other around knockin crap off. its getitn to wear it'd be better getting rid of them, itd be less stress but i love them :) and i wanna try n get them well trained so i can keep them.

Just keep them in the crate and tell them NO! very firmly. Point your finger accusingly at them if they're not quiet. If needed, smack your leg or a table firmly with a newspaper; the noise will normally surprise them into silence at least for a bit. While you smack, say NO! to them in a no-nonsense tone.

One solution to your problem is to "dog proof" your house. Before you leave the house, put everything valuable or breakable on higher shelves or in cupboards so that the dogs are unable to get to them or knock them onto the ground. If your dogs are chewing on furniture, a simple solution is to buy a spray from your pet store that you put on furniture. This spray will make the furniture taste bad to your dogs so that they'll leave it alone, and is both unharmful and most sprays are also odourless.

If you can't trust your dogs with running around the house, you'll either have to get a higher baby gate, or crate train them to the point where being in the crate becomes a "good" thing and they won't whine or bark. For some tips on doing this, take a look at the site I link to in my source. Remember to keep at it, and not give in to the temptation of your dogs' whining.

Finally, to reduce the rowdiness of your dogs, take them for a ten minute walk before you leave for work, and then play with them for a few minutes when you get back. This will work some of the energy out of them and also calm down. You may also want to purchase a product called "Nylabone", which your dogs can chew on rather than the furniture.

Best of luck to you and your lab mixes!

Why would you think that 2 lab mix or any breed of puppy would be sedate at 5 1/2 months old in an apartment. The little guys need interaction with humans and a place to run and exercise. It doesn't seem like this is an ideal place for them. Even though you love them, it is too irritating for you and too confining for your dogs. Perhaps you can find another loving home for them with someone who has the time and space to let them grow.

Are you serious?? You feel bad about crating the two, but you don't feel bad cause you haven't trained them at all?? Crate train the 2..

This is EXACTLY why someone should NEVER buy 2 puppies of the same age at the same time and pretend that they can raise them together..

Training, crate training, and learn more about dogs..
What do you figure you can do.. wait and let them grow out of this ... It's only going to get worse.. Train or find a home for one.. Likely you should find homes for both of them, but NOT together!

YOU KNOW WHAT, same problem here, but you gotta crate em, i made the mistake of not crating, but my dog also has seperation anxiety and he throws up if you put him in a locked cage, hes a 1 1/2 year lab, just learn crating, take the dog to school, and learn how to be a dogowner

They are BORED, they live in an apartment, and it sounds as if the owners are not home a lot.
You need more training and exercise, or to re-home the dogs. They maight not have been a good choice for your lifestyle.
All puppies chew...especially when they are bored!!!

With two dogs that age, you should be home FULL TIME. Like not employed outside the home. They are NOT trained and need obedience class and some daily walking!!!

Then train them! Go. Now. Find an instructor or class that uses positive reinforcement and observe a few classes. Then get them enrolled pronto. And start practicing NILIF (nothing in life is free). Try these links to get you started. Do it now!

Don't take them to a Pet Shop OR the SPCA. Find a NO KILL shelter in your area and surrender them. They will carefully screen potential owners and find them the best homes possible.
