Sorry tom p & hotwheels, you're wrong.
Let's use Hernandez as our explanation.
In medieval Spain, a grandchild of a man named Hernando would be, for example, Pedro de los Hernandes (literally: Pedro of the Hernando's). Gradually, "de los" was omitted, and the final "s" was replaced with a "z". These type of surnames are actually aristocratic, and they're quite rare in Spain, but common in Latin America. The reason is because christened Indians, slaves, and rural peasants took the surnames of their land-owners, godparents or masters.
It can't come from Arabic; traditionally, Arabic patronymics add "bin" before the father's name, and use that as the child's surname. Spanish naming patterns do NOT come from the Moors!!!!!!

Because the Spanish language has ARABIC in it.
Between 711 AD and 1492 AD, Spain was ruled by MUSLIMS (called The Moors).
The Muslims who ruled Spain influenced the Spanish language.
The phrase "-ez" is from Arabic and means "son of".
Martinez = Son of Martin.
Rodriguez = Son of Rodrigo
Harnandez = Son of Hernan
"-ez" comes from Arabic. When Spaniards invaded and conquered Mexico, they brought their culture with them.

Because it means they are of hispanic descent or origin. Just like many white names end with "son". Many hispanic names also have "rr" or "ll" (sounds "Y").

It's from the Moores.
"Son" is a Swedish add-on meaning "son of."
In Danish they use "sen."
In Irish it's "Mc" or "O" before the name, same thing, means "son of"
