I want to take a girl skating on a date (holding hands and all that!) and so need somewhere nice and in a good setting. Ideally it would be fairly central.

Alexandra Palace. really nice view of the city during the night

Richmond used to be the best (IMHO) and is a really nice place to take a date.Unfortunately it was demolished in the nineties for some demented reason.
Second best was Streatham (which is still there):

There are a few new rinks I can't vouch for personally (found this on Yahoo)

None of them very scenic areas (Queensway is near the West End, might do?)
