Depends. Are they an illegal alien (snuck in over the border with no id or visa) or a visa overstayer (here legally, but stayed past the date on their passport.
If they are the first - there's nothing you can do but these 3 things 1. Go back to his country with him - if he gets caught or red flagged he'll never be allowed back into the US.
2. Nothing.
3. Pray to whichever God you follow that there is a change in immigration policy (much like the one that George Bush was trying to get through and that the Senate said nyet to) and that 12,000,000 illegals get offered the chance for a green card.
If they are the 2nd, there is no problem - if you are a citizen, you have the right to apply for an adjustment of status and file residency papers for your spouse, based on your marriage, no matter how long they have overstayed their visa. Your long relationship history works in your favour.
or
Repeat No. 3.
Good luck.
EDIT : Sorry guys - you don't "automatically become a US citizen" if you happen to marry one. You don't even automatically become a permanent resident. IF you are eligible for an adjustment of status (illegals are not eligible), your spouse can apply for residency for you, but citizenship is not allowed to be applied for by that resident, for at least 3 - 5 years.
EDIT : Thanks for your email clarification, Karen - I think if its been approved, you have nothing to worry about! Which will take a lot of pressure and stress of you and your family.

A question that should have been asked prior to marriage. It is much easier to get a fiance visa than one for a spouse. You will have to go file paperwork, but it must be done in your husbands home country. He can not be granted a green card while here illegally.

You can set the paperwork in motion for him to be a premanent resident as he is married to a citizen. It will probably be points against him for living here illegally. Your chances would probably be better if he left the country and started the paperwork while he was on legal footing.

You need to see a lawyer because people are getting legalized every day but it ALL depends on the exact details of each situation.

If you are a US citizen then your spouse automatically qualifies for citizenship. Your daughter was born here she is already a citizen.
