There is a light on the dashboard of my Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo (I just bought it used). What does this light do? It looks like a little red warning light of some sort but I have never seen this in any other vehicles. What is it?

if its just a round red light, its for the SKIM (sentry key immobilizer system) or the factory alarm system. if you got an owners manual with the jeep, there is a section to show you all the lights and tells you what they are. or you could go to a dealer and ask a service writer. if any light is staying on you should probably have it looked at to be safe.

Sounds like an aftermarket alarm system. We had one on our Grand Caravan. There was a disarming switch hidden under the dashboard. The red light indicates the system is on. It was nothing more than a red LED about 1/8" in diameter with no symbol by it.

Could be a brake system warning (low brake pad or fluid for example), but you'll need to describe the light better. Are there any symbols on it?

It is just the security system.Check on the key if there little bump on it.If there is a bump it is the microchip that controls the immobleizer. The immobleizer either controls the ignition or fuel system and shuts them down if the car detects a hotwire.

Where is it located on the dash. Is it on when the key is on or only when engine is running. Stop at a jeep dealer and ask the SERVICE SHOP boss, they are usually helpful.

If it is a red "!" then it means that your emergency brake is engaged. If it says something like "part time" or "full time" then this means your 4wd is engaged. Not too sure, as there is not enough information to really tell you what it could be.
