Hairball treatment is ok, it just slicks the insides to help get the fur out. Vasoline works like that too, it's a substitute if you can't get to the store for the hairball treatment.

Is the cough being done with the body held low to the ground and the chin out horizontally, and possibly with the head moving from side to side? That's a dry cough, nothing to worry about, it's as if they got fur caught in the breathing tube.

Hairballs are done with the cat mostly sitting, possibly the tongue tip out, a bit of drool from the mouth, and the nose pointed down to the floor so the belly can heave up what's in it. It's a totally different posture.

If the cat is coughing and twisting it's head at the end, then that's something possibly caught or a bad tooth, and might warrent a trip to the vet to have them check her mouth.

Hairball treatment called Petromalt. You can get it at any pet store. Most cats like the taste and will lick it right off the tube. If she won't, smear it on her front paws. Cats hate anything on their feet and she will lick it off. It takes a couple of days to work. Keep brushing her daily- that helps. Also, if you're not using a premium food, switch her over. Supermarket food is crap and causes all sorts of skin and hair problems. Good luck.

EDIT: If your cat doesn't pass a hairball after a couple of days, or she looks like she may be showing other signs of illness, then you will need your vet.

EDIT 2: Hairball treatments are harmless. It's basically vaseline with flavor. Worst case scenario is that if you give too much your cat might have loose poops for a few days. Try it- I bet it works.

If it is a hairball- they sell stuff at most pet stores, I believe it's called something like catlax- it's in a small tube and you let the cat lick a little of it- it gets rid of hairballs- I used to give it to my cats and it worked great. However, he could have an upper respiratory infection so you might consider taking him to the vet.

She should see the vet. Gagging could be from needing to bring up a hairball -- hairball remedy may help -- or for another medical reason such as ingesting a non-food item, having a cold or a heart condition. Your vet will help you get her the best treatment.
