My knees make a grinding noise. It is very painful at times. At times I have to extend my leg and make my knees pop in order to releave the pain and discomfort.

Can be some very different problems. I hope it is because you sit still a lot. More movement (stair climbing) will solve this.
The other one is wear and tear..maybe even literal tear in which case you would need to see a doc to have these torn fibers removed surgically

Often times joint pain can be caused from dehydration. Increase your daily water intake and see if the condition improves.
