If you were to ask me, I'd say that no war is fought for religious purposes or for religious reasons. All wars are fought because of greed for power and wealth, which amount to the same thing. Where religion comes into it is that an innate need for spiritual dependency is used to control the minds of people to the extent that, contra to specific religious doctrine, they will kill their fellow man and even lay down their own lives for the sake of what would otherwise be someone else's power and wealth.
The technique is getting a bit transparent these days, which is why people tend to protest. It's not because they're too cowardly to lay down their lives for their countries and their leaders, nor is it necessarily because they're irreligious; it's because masses of humans have now attained the stage of enlightenment at which they realise they are of no lesser value than the generals who are paid to have them kill each other.
(Incidentally, I could express my point of view in religious terms, but I guess that wouldn't help me get ten points and five stars.)

Since atheism is not a religion or system of belief, how could there be any wars fought in its name? There can never be any wars fought in the true name of Christianity because Lord Jesus did wage war or instigate violence. Wars are waged by secular nations, even if they happen to have a Christian majority. This includes the crusades because they were waged by secular Kings, princes, and laymen. Islam is different because there is less of a line drawn between religion and the state.
I gather that you are trying to make the point that all wars are waged by dillusional religious fanatics and if everyone would just wake up to the realization that the universe appeared out of nothing and accept that God does not exist then we will finally have peace on Earth. Even though this could never happen because God has given us an innate sense of Him and even cultures that He has not revealed himself to seek him in different ways (i.e Paganism, Hinduism, Buddhism, every other world religion besides Judaism and Christianity), the actions of Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and Pot Pot prove this theory to belong.
I know you and the other athiests on this question do not care what I say. However, I urge to think about this question. Have you ever witnessed something come from nothing? Newton's First Law of motion states that an object at rest tends to stay at rest and that an object in uniform motion tends to stay in uniform motion unless acted upon by a net external force. Now how can you believe that something as big and complex as the universe could have came from nothing?

Stalin killed Christians to promote atheism which of course gave him power as the only people saying there is a greater power are dead.
Do you even remember what Stalin looked like. What the world was like with him in it.
Even as a child I knew it was a good thing that he died.
Doesn't it tell you something when so many like him are at war with God and his people?
More than three thousand people die everyday because they are Christian. That's today not back then.

No wars have been fought in the name of atheism. Plenty have been fought in the name of religion.
However, Stalin was atheist and he did kill a lot of people (if i remmeber correctly it was Stalin that killed people because they were religious). Whilst that is inexcusable there have only been a small handful of people like Stalin in human history. Wars for religion have been going on ever since the first religions were created, started by thousands of people.
A handful of Atheists may have been insanely blood thirsty but a good hundred thousand religious people have also been.
The death count does not really matter, there were less people around in the middle ages (the crusades) to kill for religion but you can easily bet that if there were more people then more would have been slaughtered.

Nope.
And I don't get why people are using the Hitler/Stalin/Pol-Pot card (even though Hitler used the support of the church). They killed because they were psychotic SOBS, they didn't kill in the name of atheism.
Yes they happened to be atheists (Hitler wasn't though), but if we play that card then EVERY war is fought in the name of religion since there is a religious person somewhere in the ranks. It's a ridiculous correlation-does-not-imply-causation fallacy.
And besides, these deaths are due to refined killing techniques. If they were present in the past, the dead due to religion would be much higher. Stabbing every individual is alot more work than spraying them with a machine gun.

Atheism is by definiton a NON beleif in a deity. wars are not foughtover what people dont beleive in.
in the case where one religious group invades another based on a beleif then the non beleivers would simply be fighting in self defence against that. it isnt the same thing.
In a mainly secular society we must all stand up for the common good so if anything we would beleive in that.

Think of what you are asking. Atheism is a negative term. It is a term for NOT believing in something.
99% of all wars are fought over land, no matter what the beliefs or non-beliefs of the participents.

While most religions I know enough about to comment on are definately dubious in their methods and as flawed as any other philosophy in this infinately perspective filled existance, I would say that the motives for war are as equally motivated by atheism as by any passion for religion.

I suppose your asking coz you're disgusted with all the wars carried out in the name of religion or God. I am disgusted too.
I realise though, that although religion may give a reason for war, it is governments who create the strategies of war. Scientists make weapons, bombs designed to maim and disfigure rather than kill, landmines designed to look like children's toys, etc. Atheists then fight in the wars alongside those with a faith.
There are Christians around the world who are in prison because they take a neutral stand refusing to take part in war, refuse to go through with compulsary military service and even refuse to assist the war effort in seemingly small ways such as clean weapons, etc. I've yet to hear of any war-hating atheist do the same.
