Serous membranes line the internal subdivisions of the ventral body cavity. The pleura lines the pleural cavities and covers the lungs, the peritoneum lines the peritoneal cavity and covers the surfaces of enclosed organs, and the pericardium lines the pericardial cavity and covers the heart. The primary function of any serous membrane is to minimize friction between the opposing parietal and visceral surfaces.
