Ok. Just say that any of the guys LOCKED into the CHASE have a bad night right off the bat @ Richmond? Whether it comes from slight-damage, an ill-handling race car, or whatever... Do you think around halfway of the race if their car isn't a contender to win the race, and know they have no shot @ winning they will just go ahead and call it an early night?

Like @ halfway, say Hamlin or Gordon or Stewart or whoever... are running mid-pack (17th to 30th or so) and the car is just horrible as hell, and has been since the start of the race.. Do you think any of them would consider parking it for the rest of the night since it really doesn't matter?

Good question! I think if it's a totally hopeless cause they'd park it, but if the car is still drivable and can finish the race safely they'll race it to the finish.

These guys don't just race because it's their job, they race because it's in their blood and they love it!

And I can't believe sponsors would be ok with them just parking it either. If they shell out millions of dollars to have their name on that car then by golly it better be on that race track to the finish!!!

No, they will continue to race. Sure the points don't mean anything at that point, but keep in mind that money talks! Sponsors paid a lot of cash to be put on those cars and show up on national television. If that car CAN be on the track it will be.

It is also important to the crew and team as a whole to reel in that prize money. When a lot of races give away 50 grand for finishing dead last, the difference between 20th and 40th is still a substantial amount of money.

In other words, a driver would be making a lot of people angry if he decided he wasn't going to drive just because points were no longer an issue (see Kyle Busch).

Stevo nailed it,its those pesky sponsers who pay a small fortune to see their cars out there, that would have a problem with it.In keeping with that thinking have you ever heard a driver try harder to convince his crew his car was done then Greg Biffle Sat. night.Man that guy ran down about a zillion reasons why his car was cooked and said he was headed for the garage.Guess his crew had other thoughts, they got him back out there for a bit.But I can't remember ever hearing anyone try so hard to get out of a car.

I'm not so sure. They are required to show the Brand if at all possible. If the car was badly damaged and there was no hope to catch up they may not bust their butts to get back out there. If there is a chance though I see them working to get back out.

Well thats the thing it doesn't matter what happens to Jeff and Denny because they are already locked into the chase, as are the top 7 in the points, but if the other 5 drivers who aren't locked in already then they would be in trouble of not making the chase.

They might use the remainder of the race as a kind of test session, to test different setups, or shocks or something, but they wouldn't quit. Their sponsors pay big bucks to have their names and logos out on the track.

I don't think any driver would intentionally park their car, no matter how bad the car is. DNF's just don't look good. However, there are a few out there that I personally would like to see do that !

No I can't see any of the guys locked in would do that. They would still want the best finish they could get.

No. Most drivers get a percentage of what they win on top of a base salary. I dont see them giving up and dropping from 17th to 40th.
