Its just body damage and no one else was involved. Also if I use my rental coverage will that make my premium go up (i.e. is premium tied to how much the total claim cost)? Thanks

Okay. I'm guessing when you say "claim that didn't involve others" that we're talking about a one-car collision, yes?

If that's the case, your damages will be paid out through your collision coverage and any amount, regardless of how big that claim is, will increase your premium. Only way it won't is if your company has Accident Forgiveness and you haven't had any accidents or violations in the past three years. If you don't have Accident Forgiveness, you're out of luck.

Premium isn't tied to the amount of the actual claim when it comes to collision. In some areas the amount of liability paid can change the surcharge amount, but it's different when it comes to your own car.

And BTW, rental cars are covered under a different coverage that actually doesn't give you an increase to use. So you're paying for rental coverage and might as well use it, as that is a no-surcharge coverage.

The answer depends on your agency, location, driving history (past tickets, etc), etc, none of which you mentioned.

For example, if you have never had a claim, then you might be "forgiven" on this one, whether it was your fault or not.

However, if you are a "chronic" claimant, then, yes, it will go up.

Keep in mind that your deductible is also a factor; for example, if you have a $500 collision damage, then you will get back only $900, so any premium increase will be based on some part of that amount, not the full $1400.

It depends on your Insurance Company, but it is unlikely. If you have a $1,000 deductible you might save in the long run, if you just pay the balance of $400 and not even File.
