I used to work at Target over the summer and last year some woman did this to me. I could never, ever imagine myself doing this to a cashier! Their job sucks enough, and who knows what their private life is like!

Would you complain to a mamanger if a cashier didn't smile at you?

Haha, thanks for the answers. The worst part is my manager actually pulled me off my lane to have a "talk" about my "bad behavior" with the customer. If I wasn't smiling before, then I certainly wasn't smiling after that! LOL!

Lydia H--I never said that I disliked my job at Target. I didn't mind working there, except for the snooty rich So Cal housewives. I wasn't smiling because I had been having EXTREMELY difficult issues at home and therefore had nothing to smile about.

If I don't have the right attitude for dealing with the public, then why did the managers at Target constantly put me in positions that had even MORE involvement with the public (from cashier to returns counter where I get yelled at all the time) even after the incident? Why did they give me special assignments that other workers didn't get if my attitude was so bad?

Why is the job that I have now in college ALSO dealing with customer service and why have I been promoted to student supervisor if my customer service skills are so poor?

Why did I get a summer internship in Japan that had me dealing with the public extensively and in another language to boot?

Maybe you should stop assuming things about people you don't know!

Anyone who would complain over something so trivial has obviously never worked with the public! That woman should try being a cashier for 30 days and see just how often she smiles.
As long as a cashier or other service person is reasonably polite, accurate and not downright rude, they have done their job.
Who knows what a person might have going on in their life or what kind of jerk off they may have had to deal with 5 minutes prior.
Being very pleasant is always nice, but nobody but a ninny can go around with a smile plastered on their face 24/7.

Never, everyone has a bad day. As long as I get what I came for, there is no reason complaining over something petty. Actually, I tried to be as polite as possible to all cashiers, worked with public once and there are so much they have to put up with.

She could have purely decrease you off because of the fact she already understood the kind you needed your sandwich and she or he replaced into busy/ had different significant issues to do. you do no longer certainly understand that she introduced your grandfather's nutrition after yours on objective. That sounds like it may be particularly inconvenient for her to attend to run your nutrition. purely yet another factor for her to no longer scratch off her checklist of issues to do. did you realize the kitchen messes up each now and then, too, and has to remake issues? The greater complicated the order, the less complicated it particularly is for the kitchen to clutter it up. i'm guessing you have in no way been a server earlier. in reality, you in basic terms ought to attain that it replaced into purely lunch and it did no longer influence you that a lot. bypass away her a shitty tip and get on with your existence.

Should I also expect that they clap upon my arrival and laugh at any jokes I make during the transaction? My measure of customer satisfaction is based on them being helpful, knowledgeable, and expedient. I'm there purchase goods not chat up a cashier. Their smile would more than likely be a facade anyways, what exactly about my presence their elates them enough to smile at me?

All I expect from a cashier transaction is "Hello, how are you today...here's your total...thank you, have a nice day." So long as the cashier isn't rude, why complain? I understand the job is less than desirable and I always try to be one of the pleasant customers rather than one of the ones who send them over the edge. That lady was rediculous.

No. I don't see the point of doing so it will just make the other person grunper. I do try to smile at the person or say have a nice day on purpose to give the other person a little bit of cheer in there day.

Some people feel the need to make others lives miserable. That seems like one of those people.

I think it would be stupid to complain about someone not smiling.

Next thing you know you'll get reported for smiling too much!

Somebody has to be downright nasty to me for me to report them. But even from another person's perspective, one who feels that a depressing attitude is worth reporting, I don't think a smile is worth quibbling over. But since you are trying to have us look at the situation through your eyes, look through hers! Maybe that lack of a cheery grin was just the tip of an iceburg of troubles that day, maybe everything was just going wrong for her, and you not smiling sent the message that you were just another section of the world that was against her. Or, she could have just been a complete snot-head, either way. ;)
Either way, whenever you think of her, pity her, because that incident was so not your fault.

I've never complained about not being smiled at.

I've complained, though, when a cashier carried on a conversation with another worker throughout my entire transaction, without once acknowledging me. I felt that was inexcusably rude.

You don't have to smile, but you are in a CUSTOMER SERVICE position, and you have to remember who you're there for - the customer!

Absolutely not.

I recall when working in an office, men would say - 'smile you look so pretty when you smile'. You can just imagine my thoughts at this comment.

Smiling like a ninny all the time looks unrealistic and stupid.

Who ever reported you is a silly, petty cow.
