Okay my mother-law lost a diamond bracelet. It was insured and she got money for it from the insurance company. This was several months back. Now she is moving and found the bracelet hanging from a nail behind her dresser. Should she just keep her mouth shut?
Why wouldn't people just do that..my wifes engagement ring and wedding band are insured....what stops me from just calling the insurance company and saying they are lost and collecting the money.

Nope. She should tell the insurance company - and refund them the payment money. Or offer them the braelet.

As to what stops you - this claim counts against you. If you have more than one claim, you'll have a REALLY hard time finding insurance anywhere, at any price. That will likely lead to forced placement coverage, and eventually foreclosure of your house.

You mother in law should call the insurance company and let them know she found the jewelry. To do otherwise is insurance fraud. Would she get caught? Probably not. But she would be committing a crime (and a sin) to not contact the company. Insurance fraud is the reason why insurance premiums are so high and by not contacting the insurance company she would be no better than the crooks that stage accidents and fake injuries.

The insurance company would either let her keep the money or the bracelet. They would not ask her to give them more than they paid her for the bracelet.

What SHOULD be stopping you is the fact that if you report a false claim, you're committing insurance fraud, which could lead to cancellation, fines, and prison.
Your mother in law did not intend to mislead anyone, but she SHOULD be honest about the situation and call the insurance company. They may or may not ask for the money or bracelet back, but at least her conscience would be clear.
