I have a friend who's 3 yr old has an extreme obsession with laundry soap bottles...likes to play with them and carries them around the house like a security blanket. He also takes 2-3 baths each day (not sure if he likes to play in the water or if he's wanting to be clean?). And it's not just laundry soap bottles, he also likes cleaning supply bottles like windex and the like (keep in mind these are all empty when he plays with them so no poisoning risks ok).
So I'm wondering does he have weird pschological problems or is it just strange parent behavior? The mom is sick of the soap bottles but won't get rid of them bc her kid throws a fit. Extra info, the boy doesn't seem to be very social, will play around other kids but not with other kids. Also seems to have little if any imagination.
Any thoughts? If you are a psych professional, please let me know what's going on with this kid. I think he needs to be evaluated

He sounds about as normal as they come...just like a blankey, or a baba that he would carry about, he is intrigued by the shape and smell probably of the soap, and loves the bubbles and the feeling it gives him....it does sound like he is in his own little world..if he is talking normal, and just a little boy who would rather play by himself, that isn't strange either...maybe he is just very independent...I would personally, not give him the cleaning supplies to baby sit him all the time however...the mom should find other things for him to get interested in,..but he doesn't sound 'disturbed to me

No, I'm not a professional, just a mother who was always willing to give her child empty bottles and boxes to play with. along with crayons, paper, sharp scissors, nuts leaves and bottle caps.
Right off hand, why would you say he has little or no imagination? Didn't you say he played with these bottles? Or is it just that his imaginings don't run in the same line as yours do? A three year old shouldn't necessarily be expected to have a huge social life. Playing happily 'alongside' children if not 'with' them at this age isn't always a bad thing. Having other children around to watch as they play and see how they play is probable good too, but the ability to play and eventually work by ones self is a pretty valuable skill also.
As to whether his mother can ever throw out emty bottles again, well, that's something the two of them will have to work on. Perhaps she can simply provide other empty containers (boxes - which are easier to build with anyway) and stuff that he can play with at the same time. If he simply likes water, give him water to play with. If it's unfeasible (like the dead of winter or your too busy to keep an eye on him at the time), give him a sand box or (if indoors) a large box full of dry rice and some small cups and cars and trucks to play with like a sand box. Many children find this calming and fun.
It's just possible that he isn't suffering from a lack of imagination, but a need to have things available so he can stimulate it himself. Don't tell him HOW to play with something, just make it available and let him use his own imagination.

Three year olds are weird, they form strange attachments to lots of things.
As for the not playing with other kids, that too is normal behavior for a 3 year old.
The only worry would be the imagination, but I think his attaching to a soap bottle is pretty imaginative.
What does the mom think?

sounds like bronchial asthma. bronchial asthma isn't a huge panic form spell. that's many times purely an inflammation in there that flames up over specific issues and leads to coughing spells.

3 year olds can find anything to play with these days!
Kids play with anything and everything. Don't stress/worry about it.

She isn't doing the kid any favors by feeding into his obsession. If she can't tell him no, they have bigger problems.
