The special was a hot sandwich-usually roast beef, roast turkey or meatloaf. Green beans always featured somewhere. A choice of mashed potato or french fries with gravy poured over everything-even the fries.Roll on the side. Does anyone remember this-and do you have a place that serves this retro food where you live?

Down the street from me is a very small retro restaurant about the size of the old trailer type diners with stools and booths that has been in existance since anyone in the area can remember. They are known for their fish and chips and weinies, especially, but serve other dinners as well. (It's actually my favorite place to eat because of the home-style cooking.) Another similar restaurant is nearby but not so old, and is done in the same retro style. Most of the old diners that looked like railroad cars are gone or empty, but there are still a few around.

I've found quite a few places (usually family restaurants) in the Chicago area that serve just what you describe. They usually call it hot beef sandwich.....2 slices of bread piled with sliced roast beef, smothered in gravy with green beans and mashed potatoes.
