I'm sure what they have now is a quick release to them. I think it would be pretty complicated to come up w/ a secure device that would act as a quick release when there are some many components inside the car that the drivers have to release before getting out. On the 2nd part of this question, there already is an escape hatch that M. Waltrip and Jeremy Mayfield had hands on help making, and designing. They aren't mandated by NASCAR though, so most teams don't feel that they need them or use them. I think it'd be smart to have though.. Not just because of the taller drivers but what if a driver is trapped against an inside or outside wall on the drivers side? It'd be easier to go out the top then climb across to get out wouldn't ya think?

The escape hatch on the top of the car SHOULD be mandatory. What happens if the driver's side is up against the wall, and the car is on fire? They're going to have a heck of a time crawling through the other side. Brian Vickers commented on this on Inside Nextel last night. With all the safety features in the car nowadays, even he has trouble getting out. If he has trouble, what about someone larger and taller than him, (ie, Michael)?
If they're so concerned about the safety of these drivers, I feel the top hatch is a must.

Not sure how a quick release would work or even if its practical seeing as how the HANS is probably the most time consuming out of all the gear.As for a roof hatch Michael Waltrip did come up with one,but it adds alot of weight to the car and since its not mandated the guys who would choose to have one would be at a competitive disadvantage.Nascar feels with the roomier COT cars a roof hatch is unnecessary,I hope their right and we don't have to learn the hard way.

HELL YEAH !!!!
Then they would have drivers like M.W , that when your car is on fire (weather oil or fuel ) they can get out of the car before someone is seriously hurt. either from the smoke or flames.
The roof hatch was a great idea (unless your upside down) but with the hans devise needs a quick release. Their harness straps have a quick release. But it is getting the hans off and the steering wheel that needs to get out of the way and then there is the air vent hose on the helmet that Denny Hamlin had problem with couple weeks ago needs a release too.
Great Question

I'm sure they are working on it. They have mentioned in the past that they are developing variuos safety features for Nextel and Bush Series cars. The new COT is implementing alot of the ideas.

I like the idea of the ejection seat. Just imagine how exciting the race will be when drivers accidentaly hit that button like they do with the engine kill switch!!
