Personally, I don't see why you have to choose between the two. There is absolutely no reason why you can't have your religion, and he have his, and remain friends. I think it would be a real shame to loose a good friend over religion. God has many names and faces. Who's to say you aren't both acknowledging the same God, but in different ways? You can respect each others belief system and simply agree that you don't agree. It's that simple. You don't have to agree on this in order to be friends.
may Peace be with you both.

Let's look at some verses from Quran about befriending the Jews and the Christians, or anyone not Muslim (Submitter) for that matter. These two verses are regulating relations with any people, regardless of faith;
[60:8] GOD does not enjoin you from befriending those who do not fight you because of religion, and do not evict you from your homes. You may befriend them and be equitable towards them. GOD loves the equitable.
[60:9] GOD enjoins you only from befriending those who fight you because of religion, evict you from your homes, and band together with others to banish you. You shall not befriend them. Those who befriend them are the transgressors.
I think you can still be his friend according to these verses.
Peace.

Christians choose their religion as young as they want. In fact, you can't be a "born Christian". I'm a Christian, and I have had many non-Christian friends. Maybe instead of worrying about losing contact with your best friend, you should be asking yourself why you are following a "god" that might ask that of you.

Yes, you are. But you are discouraged from making them your confidants. Friends can and do influence each other, the closer you are to someone the more they can influence you. My brother, keep him as a friend but make new friends who are strong in Islam. Encourage him to continue being a Muslim. It is a very serious thing that your friend is thinking of doing. It is important that you have other friends... really important. Friends do have a lot of influence! If he has weak faith, he might influence you to be weak also. Keep his friendship, but have other friends who are strong in faith.

Kafir doesn't mean disbeliever. It means rejector, one who covers up something. In the Quraan, the people referred to are those of the establishment and their allies (including some among Jews and Christians) who attacked the messenger and his followers, drove them out of their homes and terrorized them into the next town. For example: Iblis/Satan isn't a disbeliever. He knows God is real. He rejects his faith in his covenant and is hostile to mankind. He is a kafir. Those who followed Muhammad were never ordered to hostility, but defense. 42:39 And those who, when great wrong is done to them, defend themselves, 42:40 The guerdon of an ill deed is an ill the like thereof. But whoever pardons and amends, his wage is the affair of God. He loves not the unjust, 42:41 And whoever defends himself after he has suffered wrong, for such, there is no way against them, 42:42 The way is only against those who oppress mankind, and wrongfully rebel in the earth. For such, there is a painful doom, 42:43 And truly, whoever is patient and forgives, that truly is the steadfast heart of things, 60:7 It may be that God will ordain love between you and those of them with whom you are at enmity. God is mighty, and God is forgiving, merciful, 60:8 God forbids you not those who warred not against you on account of religion and drove you not out from your homes, that you should show them kindness and deal justly with them. God loves the just dealers, 60:9 God forbids you only those who warred against you on account of religion and have driven you out from your homes and helped to drive you out, that you make friends of them. Whoever makes friends of them, such are wrong doers. 2:62 Those who believe and those who are Jews, and Christian and Sabaean – whoever believes in the God and the last day and does right - surely their reward is with their Lord, and there shall no fear come upon them; neither shall they grieve. The Sunnis can have the hadiths...I don't touch 'em. Sura Fatihah doesn't carry that meaning in the Quraan. The hadiths couldn't be implemented until Muhammad had been gone for 250 years. Ibn Kathir is farther removed and is welcome to his own opinions. Tafsir is just that...what he thought it meant. It's a reflection on him, not the Quran.

Going to be hard in this day to be friends with a Christian possible I'm sure.
A wild haired *** of a man (Ishmael) doesn't appeal to most Christians.

Brother you are allowed to be friends with Christains and Jews. You are not allowed to make friends with Christain or Jewish leaders. As for any other religion I think it's haraam but please go to a Masjid and ask your local Imam. ALLAH U AKBAR!
