my dad said that important, proven hadiths were written down by a scholar (i think) years after the prophets (SAW) death. my dad also said that he (the scholar) researched the validity of the hadithes so, they are pretty much unarguable.
but there are some weak hadiths as well he told me, and i shouldnt place my faith in them because they could be wrong. so tell me.
how do i differ the good from bad (unproven...extremist)?
are there any books i can buy, or websites i can visit?
thanks
Shame
PS: i REALLY dont want to follow unproven hadiths. it feels like your commiting a sin because you dont know if your listening to the prophets (SAW) words or some made up story.

Dear Son
Assalaamu alaikum warahmatullah
Islam is based on both Holy Book Quran And Ahaadeeth (plural of Hadeeth). Without Hsdeeth you cannot practice even the main five pillars of Islam.
Holy Quran only orders to pray Hadeeth teaches you how to pray and what times and how many times.
Holy Quran orders you to Fast in Ramadhan. Hadeeth teaches you how to fast and gives all it's rulings.
Holy Quran Orders you to Pay Zakat. Hadeeth teaches you how it is to be paid with all the cetails.
Holy Quran Orders you to Perform Haj. Hadeeth teaches you how it has to be performed with minute details.
You can say Allah orders you through Holy Quran and Holy Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam teaches you through his sayings and Ahaadeeth how to fulfill the Allah's orders.
Allahu Ta'ala says in Holy Quran:
3:31. Say: "If ye do love Allah, Follow me: Allah will love you and forgive you your sins: For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."
Any way all the Faraiz and Wajibaat which are obligatory in Islam are being explained and abridged by Fiq Islamic Jurisprudence and there is no conflict on it among Muslims and Scholars.
It is only certain Sunna and Nawafil which are not obligatory on a Muslim are of some controversies, which might have confused you.
My sincere advice to you is to follow a Religious Scholar of fame and take his guidance in the matters of selecting Ahaadeeth instead of you on your own trying to examine and select because it needs vast knowledge and the religious scholars have devoted their life in attaing that knowledge.
Nowadays it is a trend and it is made easy too through internet to browse Ahaadeeth and certain people start commenting even on the framed Rules which were framed by the greatest scholars of the period.
Allah says in Holy Quran:
16:43 Ask the men of knowledge if you know not.
May Allah guide All of us towards the Straight Path Aameen.

Muslims follow the sunnah because the quran says to live like the Prophet (saw) lived so how else to do that but to follow the sunnah? But you see, the problem is that some ahadith are false so which to trust? Tirmidhi is well known for having a lot of controversal ahadith that have no back up. So that's a problem. Many Muslims ignore him, but others who don't know better follow him. Okay so what about the others? You hear a lot of about Bukhari because he was very picky. For example, if he tried to get a quote from a guy, and that guy was doing something not Islamic, he wouldn't take his quote. So if he was eating outside, which Muslims shouldn't do (unless they're feeding everyone) then bam, no hadith from him. Also, he checked the backgrounds of the people giving him quotes. So he'd ask around: is this guy honest? Trustworthy? Does he have a good memory? Was he actually in that place at that time? (to have heard the quote). If the quote was of another person, meaning, the guy heard it second hand, he'd go back and check the other person in the chain, and so on. So he was really careful. Finally, most (all?) of his narrations have more than one source saying the same or almost exactly the same thing. In many cases there are 3 different sources per quote. So that is far more trustworthy than just one guy saying, "Yeah I heard that." Now some people follow not just the Prophet saw but the sahabahs too. To me this is crazy. No where does it say to follow the sahabahs. Moreover, some of them were terrible Muslims, even after the death of the Prophet saw, having more than 4 wives and also not paying zakat until their death beds, etc. I'm not saying everything they did was bad, but I just don't see them as a decent example. the Prophet saw is enough. Once you find a source you think is okay, you compare what is said against the quran. If it doesn't match up, you toss it. I dont know if there are any books that do that. So you eliminate everything that doesn't have a strong chain, and everything that doesn't coincide with the quran, and that's what you use. It's a lot of work. Plus the sunnis and shias have different collections, but some are the same, so those are the more "safe" ones, I suppose (although I haven't made a particular study of the differences to really comment). If you follow the quran, you'll have more or less enough to go by. If you get stuck and don't know what to do, the hadiths can help you out. If someone tells you something is part of Islam and it doesn't sound valid, ask where they got it from. If they can't quote you, ignore them. If they quote the Quran, look it up. if they quote a hadith, look it up when you have time, but don't worry about it. Quran first and foremost. Some people put too much faith in Bukhari and they more or less ignore the Quran in favour of following the hadiths. This is a bad policy and basically elevates him to godhood or at least prophethood which is not his station. So keep your own head level when researching. -Hayat

A human must develop "Wisdom", in order to interpret scripture, or make correct decisions.
This is called (Ilm). - Divine Knowledge, The Ocean of Knowledge.
Trust God (SWT)! Turn it over to Allah (SWT), and let Allah (SWT) supply your "Wisdom" and answers.
In sha' Allah
Allah (SWT) is "The Forgiving One".
"Wisdom" says, "Do not let guilt rule ones life."
We are human, humans make mistakes.
Consult with an elder if you have doubts.
That is a primary rule!

You are born, it seems, into the mythology you are practicing.
All I can suggest to you is that you have the same life and world as all the Saints and Prophets.
And, as they drew their own conclusions as to what it all meant, you get to draw your own conclusions too.

The entire Islamic religion is invalid.
Have you ever seriously looked at the Bible? Have you ever met Christ? And if not, how can you be sure he's not who he says he is?
