Because the Bible promotes the R&S drinking game:
Give strong drink to him who is perishing, And wine to him whose life is bitter.

I'm afraid to answer your question because the bible- thumpers always give me several thumbs down, but here goes anyway. I think that people often get overzealous in their attempt to convert others to their faith, but it doesn't quite work that way. Quoting chapter and verse to a non-believer doesn't help if that person doesn't understand what the message means. You wouldn't teach a child in kindergarten by quoting long verses, but by explaining the bible's meaning to him. The person who answers a bible question just by repetition of passages is a preacher, not a teacher. They know the bible verses, but if they themselves don't actually know from the heart what it means, then it's not much help. I prefer to see people actually explain just what it means to them from their own point of view. I've read the bible from cover to cover, oh about 10 times now, just for enjoyment, although I find Deuteronomy and Leviticus somewhat tiring. The Bible is a great history book as well as a great teaching tool for Christianity. I do wish that people would say what they actually get out of a passage rather than just post several lengthy chapters. My computer can do that too.

Boy, I was soooo tempted to find a Bible quote to answer this with. *Leafs through old worn-out Bible* Nope; nothing comes to mind at once. Sorry; I guess I'll have to take you seriously.

Maybe it is because when you mock them, they shut down their feelings and grope for mental blocks to the hurtful things you have said.
If you don't say hurtful things, people will be more likely to tell you what is honestly in their hearts... and less likely to put God's Word as a barrier between you and their tender feelings.
P.S. People need a feeling of security in order to be able to ask sincere questions, and explore things without losing hope and becoming depressed. Be nice, please.

They probably see you as a lost soul. Or they may actually think you're being serious.

There are no stupid questions or stupid answers, just ridiculous questioners taking up space and making no contribution.
